(1 week stay = ~$240 AUD) I've been tossing how I rate this park for the whole week we stayed here (powered site) - ranging from "mediocre" to "what the actual f*dge" and I've settled on the following;
The park IS central to town centre. You can walk around 2 corners for great food, but the street traffic is a bit overbearing (unless you enjoy the sound of an ambulance every couple of hours, or hoons, as the park is adjacent to the highway, then this is the park for you)
It IS clean, but the grass is sparse on the middle sites and the mud is plenty (no concrete pads provided for setup).
The staff dont offer a warm welcome, but they do have free WiFi (or I suppose, included in the price) for a week.
The place is maintained, at minimum cost and effort and it shows, from missing shower hooks to a lack of mixing valve for the bathroom sinks (seperate hot and cold faucets at each sink)
The park is old. For the old, By the old. I have nothing against the age of a person, however I feel this isn't a mutual attitude in the park staff. Expect to be treated as just another person paying too much for a place that offers "long-term rates" online, only to have that offer removed and getting slogged with the extra $60-odd dollars at check-in 2 days later (start of winter, seriously?!)
Friends stayed in a cabin with no AC, dodgy flooring, a tiny space and a leaking bathroom -- for full price ($95/night, 2x nights = $180 for a sub-par experience)
In my opinion, absolutely not worth the price, but conveniently located, offering bare-essential amenities and service. Also there is no pedestrian gate to the main road, so you have to walk all the way down Krummel St to stand on a side-walk you can see from the whole site.
We love Mt Gambier and look forward to seeing what the other nearby parks...
Read moreWe had booked this place for the weekend for a family event, and I can honestly say I’ve never been to a more rundown caravan park, I have never been more disgusted in a place before and I’m paying $120 per night.. for what…. 60s style cabin, curtains are torn, door handle to bedroom falls off, lights don’t work, curtain rods fall off, couch is beyond repair. Not enough hot water for a shower.. the floors are filthy, It’s extremely dissapointing as we were so excited for this weekend. Staying at home would have been a better holiday!!! I have an infant and it feels like we are accomodating her at the local dumpster! If we had brought our tent we would have been better off.. then I read on the kitchen wall, that if the cabin isn’t left “clean” they will charge and extra $50 cleaning fee.. seriously??? I should be getting paid the $50 to clean the place when we got here.. the camp kitchen.. bbqs kept on turning off, making it hard to cook your dinner. The camping toilets had no hand wash or sanitiser… the poorest accommodation we have ever stayed in.....

Whilst travelling through the Mount Gambier area, we had a part break on our caravan and found ourselves in a bit of a bind over the Easter break. We called the Mount Gambier Central Caravan Park looking for some help, and that’s when we had the pleasure of speaking with Joy.
Even though we weren’t staying at the park, Joy was more than happy to assist. She provided us with local contacts for parts and service and, incredibly, went the extra mile by offering to loan us a part until the stores reopened after the holidays. That kind of genuine kindness and above-and-beyond service is rare these days.
If this is the level of care and support they offer to someone who isn’t even staying at the park, I can only imagine how well they look after their actual guests! We’ll definitely be booking a stay at Mount Gambier Central Caravan Park the next time we’re in the area.
Thanks again, Joy – you turned a stressful situation into a great reminder of the kindness that still exists...
