I used the Ravenshoe Hotel as a base for exploring the region, and was glad I picked this location. While it's a bit of a drive to places like Mungalli Creek Dairy, Innot Hot Springs, Lake Eacham, Chillagoe Caves and the Yungaburra Markets, this is Far North Queensland and not the city, so I was never expecting to find a location 5 minutes away from everything I wanted to see! Ravenshoe was a nice, quiet, centrally located town with 2 supermarkets and a number of other services that a traveller might need. As a point of note, the other pub in town was closed until further notice at the time I was there. If you get a chance and like the spirit of a small and friendly community market, head out to the Tumoulin markets (held on the fourth Sunday of each month between 8am-12.30pm January through to November) just 10 minutes up the road. Accommodation at the Ravenshoe Hotel was your typical charming pub-style accommodation. Rooms had the basics, and clean showers/toilets were shared up one end of the top floor. Linen and towels were, of course, provided. So were your little soap bars (I hate places that make you use liquid soap out of a pump pack on the wall!) Apart from one night when a group of staff had decided to drink and play board games out on the balcony till at least 2am, I slept well and actually thought the pillows were one of the most comfortable I had encountered. Service from the owners was personal and friendly, and it was nice to be able to have a chat each day and feel welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. Accommodation prices vary, and I would certainly struggle to pay their rack rates which I believe were around the $120 per night mark, but luckily I was able to negotiate a much more reasonable rate per night. Bartenders were friendly and things were lively, but not rowdy, at the downstairs bar. Indeed Ernie's Lager is their house beer. It's pretty much XXXX Gold at a bargain price and it hit the spot with dinner. Ask about happy hour! Speaking of dinner, the hotel's restaurant was pretty good but definitely still "finding their feet". Many of the staff appear to be, how shall I say.... from the subcontinent. Understanding local service standards/expectations and being organised therefore isn't their strong point and a management presence is definitely required to ensure things run properly. We too ordered the lamb shanks with mash for dinner one night (as one other recent review mentions) and were told they had no mashed potatoes!! C'mon, how hard is it to have your food prepped as a hospitality professional, and especially POTATOES that are part of your pub classic signature dish!!! I was almost going to suggest I run down to the supermarket, get some potatoes and make the mash for them! It wasn't a case of them having run out. In saying all that, serving sizes were good, prices were reasonable, and the food I did have was delicious. Crumbed steak was awesome, and they seem to regularly have a Calamari rings main with chips and salad on special for $15, which was also decent. Thanks to Wendy and Wayne for their hospitality, and to most of the staff for their efforts! I certainly look forward to being back one day, hopefully sooner...

Read moreThe 4 of us wanted to visit the highest Pub in Queensland... so after checking out the Ravenshoe Hotel (formerly Tully Falls Hotel.. don't get confused) on Trip Advisor, we headed straight here after booking in for the night. A grand old pub with old style rooms and share facilities... all of which were spotlessly clean (not an easy task in such an old building) and easily available as there were several showers and toilets. Beds and pillows were very comfortable with fresh, crisp new sheets... lovely after long days of travelling. We dined in the restaurant downstairs... a great story of how recipes from the distant past are still honoured and the setting is very gracious and old world.. the fireplace alight was a welcome sight on a very cold/drizzly day/night.. but made it all the more memorable. Staff were very friendly and helpful and meals were absolutely delicious and of generous size. Well done everyone at the Ravenshoe Hotel... a great experience and we'd highly recommend staying and eating here if you have the time. Otherwise, definitely call through for a drink, a meal and a chat at this grand old lady....
