Below is the description provided on the Website of Mt Lyell Anchorage. Whilst it may ONCE have been accurate, I think time and maybe Covid have changed matters. I cannot complain about the response to my enquiries or the friendly greeting we received on arrival, nor would I complain about where the property is located in the town. Very convenient. Undercover parking at the rear of the property & really the photo of Waratah Cottage living area is basically accurate. It is a much smaller area than it appears but basically what you see is what you get. There are no air conditioners or ceiling fans, however, the host did ensure we had fans - which we definitely needed - most windows not being able to be opened did not help-the old lounge emitted a musty aura. No screen to leave even the door open. The bathroom was OK, but far from what the description indicated. The heated towel rail was on and added to the stuffiness of the cottage - we did turn it off, once we realised. The shower drain was "off". It was a warm day, when we arrived, so we gave it the benefit of the doubt, but the next day it was showering & the issue remained with us. The linen was clean & bedrooms spacious. The only eating area is the coffee table. There are little to no provisions, other than stated. It was unfortunate for us that we arrived on a long weekend, the Wilderness train was not running, most businesses were closed, the raft & rail was not running - due to maintenance of weir & train tracks & the Paragon theatre had a private function booked. The Moonscape Wine Bar & Cafe was the highlight - we had a shared platter both days of our stay.

Read moreWe stayed at the Tea Tree Cottage in August 2025, towards the end of winter, it was nice looking out the windows to see snow on the mountains. The living room and bedroom both had wall radiators that worked really well, keeping us warm and comfortable during our two-night stay. Although the host, Joy, couldn’t meet us in person due to a trip to Hobart, she stayed in touch to make sure everything was going smoothly. One issue we noticed was a large crack in the front door, which let in some chilly air. However, it didn’t seem to affect the warmth inside.
The cottage is equipped with a large smart TV in the living room, which has internet connectivity. On the downside, we found the cooking utensils were not clean, particularly the frypan and plates. Also, there wasn’t an initial supply of detergent or cleaning products, which is something other places usually provide. There is a dishwasher, though, and the host did provide dishwasher tabs.
The two side-by-side showers were fantastic, with both an overhead heater and a wall-mounted fan heater, which we made full use of. The property also offers rear undercover parking and a well-equipped laundry, including an LG washer and dryer, which was a relief after two weeks on the road.
As for Queenstown, there isn’t much to do, so two nights is probably ideal. We primarily stopped by to ride the Wilderness Train, but most things were closed when we arrived on Friday and again when we returned on Saturday after our train ride. The town has two IGAs, one is more of an IGA Express, while the other is a full supermarket.
What we found disappointing was the lack of complimentary milk, cleaning supplies, and the need for repairs on the front door. That said, the cottage was otherwise comfortable, and we’d recommend it for...
