Overpriced studio in a place with little on offer

S42°30.501' E147°54.643' Triabunna is not much else of interest to tourists, other than the fact that this is the starting point for magical Maria Island NP. Accommodation options are limited. The Island Eden B&B with good reviews is located 1.4 km away from the harbour, above the bar & restaurant of the Spring Bay Hotel are rooms with shared facilities and the Tandara Motor Inn on the highway should not be considered. The Triabunna Cabin & Caravan site offers cabins and two studios. After reading many reviews and complaints about the cabins, the studios looked a better option. Actually, if you look at the large number of caravans and motorhomes in front or behind the Spring Bay Hotel (with coin operated showers), this might be the best option in Triabunna if you bring your caravan or motorhome.

The studio is part of the old Spring Bay police station of, renamed Triabunna in 1836. What would have been a prison cell is still in the back. The building has two studios and a place where the owners live. A new bathroom, with good shower, has been fitted in the front of living room, making the living room smaller. In addition, a spiral staircase has been placed to reach the bedroom in the attic, making is smaller again. This spiral staircase is not suitable for people with disabilities or obesity and large suitcases (which need four wheels to be moved). Finally, a large flat screen television makes the living room tiny. There is no kitchen inside. A small cooking place and sink is outside and you can sit in the front garden. With fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and kitchen utensils inside, you can prepare a small breakfast yourself. No breakfast is included. Compared to the living room, the bedroom in the attic is large, with a double bed and a single bed. The bedroom has air conditioning and a television. The double bed slept excellent.

According to several reviews on Tripadvisor, Alistair & Gina have not received any recognition nor commendation for their hospitality. In our case, the check-in went smoothly. Gina showed how to unlock the doors. During our stay, the studio was not services. In February of 2020, we paid $152.25 per night. We contacted Alistair & Gina by e-mail and made a direct booking without using internet travel agencies with their high fees.

It is clear that the studio in this old Spring Bay police station is overpriced for what is on offer, but in general, there is not much on offer in Triabunna. Somehow, one felt captive in this old...

We recently stayed a couple nights at the Triabunna Cabin & Caravan Park. This is a fit for purpose caravan park on Vicary Street in Triabunna. Caravans and campervans are packed in rather tightly right next to one another but beyond lack of individual space, this park is just fine for the AUD$49 per night going rate. ||Reception staff were friendly, powered sites worked expectedly. There is a communal kitchen area with enough space for 2-3 parties to do a bit of food prep and cooking. There is laundry facility and clean bathrooms with showers ($2 for 5 min). ||The park is with short 3 minute walk to IGA and Spirit of Maria Cafe on Vicary Street and 6-7 minute walk down to the Maria Island NP check-in centre ferry and Fish Van. All just fine if you are planning a night or two in Triabunna. We would be fine to...

Stayed over the Australia Day weekend with a large group of friends. Some in tents, some in campers/caravans and one in a cabin. Although smaller than some of the caravan parks it is well maintained and the owners are friendly and very helpful. Everyone had a great time. Alan and Sandy even put on a free BBQ on Australia Day which brought everyone in the park over to socialise and it was a fabulous evening!
