We regularly visit this establishment and have always been pleased with the friendly service. Today, I called in and interacted with two staff members— a young girl and a more mature lady—both of whom were cheerful and welcoming, and the food was good.

However, my experience was marred by a concern I observed while waiting for my order. I watched the older lady handling the food. She poured the chips into a stainless steel bowl and then proceeded to add them to the orders without wearing gloves. What worried me further was that she was also touching various surfaces, cleaning, and even wiped her hand across her face during the process—all while handling food with ungloved hands.

I noticed another customer observing this as well. I stood there for about 10-15 minutes, and during that time, she did not wash her hands. This raises concerns about cross-contamination, a significant contributor to foodborne illnesses. Even though the food looked good, I could not eat it the end, I had to throw them away.

Overall, I am disappointed and worried by what I observed. You need to make sure your staff are properly trained, because I am n pretty sure that I am not the only one who...

In May, my experience at the restaurant left me quite disheartened. Despite placing our order 20 minutes before the scheduled departure of the ferry, there was a noticeable lapse in service. The restaurant chose to prioritize local kids, cutting the line in front of us – a decision that, while somewhat understandable, was a bit disconcerting.

What compounded the situation was when we politely requested the staff to expedite our order due to the imminent departure of the ferry. Instead of a reassuring response, a lady from the kitchen confronted us with an attitude that was quite off-putting. To make matters worse, she brazenly lied to our faces, claiming that we weren’t allowed to bring food onto the ferry.

Such misinformation and the dismissive tone of the staff left a sour taste in our mouths. It’s disheartening when a simple request for prompt service is met with resistance and dishonesty. While I understand that local customers may have a certain priority, it’s crucial for any restaurant to treat all patrons with respect...

Good fresh fish

S42°30.574' E147°54.873' Triabunna is not much else of interest to tourists, except the fact that this is the starting point for magical Maria Island NP. The food options were limited: the Colonial Food & Wine was for sale, the Triabunna Takeaway was closed and the Spring Bay hotel kitchen was closed on Sundays. For hungry Maria Island visitors, only the brilliant Fish Van at the harbour came to the rescue. Do not think The Fish Van will drive away, because it is housed in old shipping containers.

Open until 7pm to give the last passengers on the returning Maria Island ferry the last chance to fill up with flathead, trevalla, barracoota and flake (a nicer name for shark) – whatever is fresh from the local fishing boats – along with mountains of chips. In February of 2020, we enjoyed the trevalla and flake. If you want a beer with your fish & chips, buy that at the Spring Bay Hotel.

Lonely Plant found this must-visit place brilliant. It serves good fresh fish in a place without any competition....

This place sits bang opposite to the maria island ferry terminal. I cudnt stop myself from entering to find out what was so special coz ot had atleast 50 people in it. Ordered for fish and chips but was declined stating that there wasnt time enough at hand as i had a ferry to catch. I wasnt offended but liked the honesty! As i walked towards the ferry, the girl who attended to me came running behind saying that there was a miscommunication on the timing and that they could do it! I appreciated that greatly as it only proved that they value each customer even if they are jam packed! Nevertheless, i got my order in time and needless to say the fish and chips were delicious! The quantity was enough for 2 people and was moderately priced at aud12. They have a great variety on their menu and everything looked equally irresistible! The shop is run by 4 women and they r amazing in their speed! This placed shudnt be missed at any cost. Just make sure you allow at least an hour(yes! Thats how crowded it gets) before your ferry.

What a great find on the Triabunna Esplanade just past the Spring Bay Hotel. The Fish Van is a fish-n-chip shack with a handful of fish selections along with squid, prawns and a handful of sides that are freshly prepared and served hot, perfect for those seeking a bite to eat after returning from a day out at Maria Island. Opening hours are 11am to 7.30pm daily. There are a handful of outdoor bench style tables or just do take-away and eat your fish-n-chips on the esplanade somewhere. We ordered the Trevalla (Blue-eye) which was fired very nice, fillet was soft, tender and good flavour, chips were just fine. Tartar sauce came with the order, no lemon wedges however. This was have been nice. Luckily we had some back in our campervan. Enjoyed Fish Van and would gladly return to order from here again.
