I stayed at this Pousada despite mixed reviews as the location was good. Plus some of the rooms looked quite nice on the website.||||On arrival I was shown to my room (number 3), which was pretty rough around the edges and had very little light due to an internal facing window. As it was just for a few nights I took it, instead of following my instincts and asking for a different room. In addition, the bedding didn't look great - it was a little grey, as were the towels, but they smelled clean and came in a plastic wrap. I went out to buy cleaning products - as the mirror in the bathroom was pretty grotty.||||In addition the window/door contraption didn't seem particularly secure, but the hostel itself was secure and I had a safe so assumed this would be ok.||||On my last morning at c.5.30-6am, I was getting dressed and packing when I heard a slight noise outside my window. I'd left the shutter & curtains a little open as I had a very early start and wanted to let a some light in. As I leaned against the window I could make out feet and some shorts they didn't move. I banged on the window, shouted "hey" and snapped the curtains shut. Then my door knocked, I didn't answer, this was followed by the phone ringing. I now realised it was an employee who had been watching me through the window.||||I was shaken, but thankfully checking out that shortly after - but the whole incident left a very bad taste in my mouth.||||I've travelled extensively around the world, often solo and is the first experience I've had that left me truly shaken and feeling violated. If you do choose to stay at this Pousada DO NOT STAY in ROOM 3. Particularly if you're travelling alone. It is neither private nor secure.||||I met another guest at our next destination who said her room was beautiful - so I guess I got unlucky. I should have researched a little more, but was booking in haste.||||The house itself was beautiful, although it requires some TLC. But not sure I'd ever stay there again and would not recommend this to to my female...
Read moreThis place is in an amazing old colonial building which has been, for the most part, tastefully kept in an appropriate style. Our room looked lovely, came with a four poster bed, a fridge and a nice view on to the pedestrian street below.||||The location is very close to the main square in the old town. They also have a bar and a pizzeria attached to them - the pizzeria isn't a bad choice to eat in.||||I really liked the room and for the price (the discounted rate) I think it was good. I think if you paid the "standard" rate you'd probably be a bit disappointed. The breakfast was reasonable but isn't going to win any awards.||||What is frustrating is that this place could be much, much better. One of the staff was more interested in checking Whatsapp than serving us. The room clearly has a plumbing issue that should be fixed (I shaved in the sink and my hair made a bid for freedom from the plug hole in the night). There are several minor cosmetic issues that would not take long to sort out (a broken door to the balcony, a hole in the floor, the towel rack had been rehung but the old holes hadn't been filled in, a broken plug socket). ||||If you're looking for a modern hotel stay then this isn't it - if these faults had been in a modern hotel I would have been entirely less forgiving in my review. The charm comes in the building and the appearance...
