I was firstly really impressed with Penguin Pablo as we were greeted by their friendly staff with a refresher towel, cold green tea and ice cream. We were then escorted to our room (Room 1) right around the corner from the reception/bar area and there was loud music playing which sounded like the speakers were inside our room. I’m not sure if it was coming from Penguin Pablo or the hotel next door, but it was so loud that you basically had to yell to have a conversation. After a long day of travelling, it would have been nice to relax in the room. The room was nice, clean and spacious with a relaxing outdoor area, however, with no electricity (or generator) our best option was to go and explore the town.||The staff were lovely - kept our room clean, controlled mosquitoes, and also assisted us with renting a motorbike. There is no breakfast included in the stay. The food itself was also disappointing - I felt sick the first two mornings and so I decided to skip breakfast on our last day. My boyfriend ordered the muesli twice and both times the watermelon tasted like mosquito repellant. Inedible. Hotel also accepts cash only, but there is an ATM around the corner.||Then things started going downhill fast. There was a trivia event next door and we could hear every single word and sound until we decided to leave the hotel and escape the noise around 10pm. This finally stopped when we returned but was instead kept up all night by their dog who would not stop howling every night. The majority of our stay, we either had no electricity/water or disgusting brown water. After a day at the beach, returning to a ridiculously hot room with no fan, AC or running water, I felt absolutely helpless as I tried to clean up with the remains of our bottled water and a hand towel.||I barely slept the next couple nights due to various loud noises that were impossible to avoid (even using earplugs and earphones). The absolute worst part was our last night when we were rudely awoken at 5am by staff who were playing very loud music and chatting. This completely ruined my stay.||I understand that some things were out of the control of the hotel, but after our last morning, this left me absolutely frustrated. Worst hotel experience...
Read morethe good (+): the staff tried to act nice and welcoming, the bungalow bed was comfy and the whole hotel had a rather pleasant appearance||||the bad (-): the worst thing about this place was that the bungalows with their thatched roofs offer no sound isolation whatsoever; there was a party on the beach until 4 am, and the music, especially the bass was pumping like it was directly in our room, earplugs were no help at all; if you are looking for a good night sleep on any night forget this place, you can hear the all the traffic and other sounds and noises as well; the value for money was beyond terrible, as the prices they charge for a bungalow (55$ a night/no breakfast) and especially food (breakfast/lunch) are ridiculous compared to what you get; we haven't encountered any Japanese chef and they have lied to us about the breakfast ingredients (forgetting to prepare the proper cereals bowl as described in the menu, but still charging us their ridiculous prices), they have also charged us for more expensive juices etc. we have stayed in otres 1 before and had much quieter, cheaper and nicer places than this one, so i can't relate to any of the highly positive reviews here and recommend to book some other places, as this one was a pure...
Read moreThis place is not 5 star but it’s lovely.|We arrived to a welcome ‘home made ice cream’ and a menthol, ice cold face cloth. When we were taken to our room, this was filled with a menthol aroma too. It made us feel fresh after a dirty journey in a tuk tuk, past all the construction that’s going on.||The people who run the place are very helpful and apologised for the noise in the area, as soon as we arrived.||The rooms are very basic but you have a hot shower, fridge with water in it and it was the best nights sleep I’d had on the whole trip in a round bed.||It’s such a shame for businesses in the Otres area because the beach is beautiful and this was a sleepy place enjoyed by people from all over the world. Now the Chinese have taken over not just here but most of Cambodia and the country is one big construction site with casinos and high rise hotels being built. It’s really sad to see the pollution and damage caused by this takeover. There is no thought to how the Cambodian people feel or may be affected.|We were woken on a Sunday morning around 7am when the building work...
