Old hotel and it shows but staff were super nice, continental breakfast was great and our room was clean. Breakfast had lots of options eggs, bacon, sausage, including a combo of all 3, waffles and toppings, cereal, yogurt, toast, bagels, muffins. The woman who ran the breakfast was lovely and always changed the TV to kids shows for us when were got there bright and early. The hot tub was out of order when we were there and we didn't try the pool because my dad thought they said the pool was out of order too (he's hard of hearing and I wasn't with him at check in so he may have misheard). I didn't really have time to follow up on it. Soap potions were pretty small, and there is NO ELEVATOR so if you are on the second floor you have carry your luggage up. This was ok for us especially cause my kids love to help but it would not be a good thing for others. Steps are outside and completely concrete. It's actually more like a motel or inn where all the doors go directly outside. My biggest issue with the room was this: we had suite with 3 beds (one in a separate room) the stand the TV is on partially blocked the door to the separate room with the corner which is right at the level of my kids' heads if they did any running around (they're both under 6 it's going to happen) they could very easily smack their head on it. I also went in too close to it while holding one of them and got my kid in the hip with it. I would say this needs to be changed ASAP it's a hazard for any and everyone using these rooms. I don't think it would take much to get the TVs mounted, unless there's asbestos in the walls or something (not sure if it is that old though). We were here visiting family and touring over Spring Break, it was my kids' first trip to the Island and we all enjoyed ourselves. The woman running the breakfast was leaving so I'm worried breakfast will go downhill this since we all know how management likes to cut costs when good staff leave. . I would consider staying here again for the price, however I'd consider other options and book earlier next time. I just prefer a nicer/newer hotel. Other issue was I could smell pot, not consistently so someone was smoking it. You want to smoke it fine, but I shouldn't smell it in my room with all the doors and windows closed, we opened the slider to get the smell out of the room as I was getting a headache from it. The rooms are supposed to be...
Read moreBooked the rooms seeking a weekend getaway for some up-island adventuring. Our needs are fairly modest and our expectations are pretty reasonable: warm, clean rooms in a pet-friendly motel and inclusive breakfast is a nice bonus. The Campbell River Ramada met these expectations well enough.
I booked this motel for the price and as a means to see a bit of the Campbell River seaside while doing late-season skiing around the Paradise Meadows area near Mt. Washington. I banked on the Ramada reputation when I clicked the confirmation. Then I read the reviews which aren't positive.
This is a motel from another era and is in a state of bare-bones maintenance as the sea-side district fills with upscale condos situated to take in the stunning views across the Strait of Georgia and up the channel toward the Coast Mountains. The rooms were okay, but the cleaning wasn't perfect as other users have noted. Some trash had been overlooked from the previous occupant, but the sheets were crisp and the furnishings were clean and good-enough. The room was warm and quiet even with a neighbour on each side.
Maintenance is so-so. The tub caulking is dirty and old and the tub surround had been painted at some point. There are dings in the furniture and stuff just looks tired inside. Outside there are many signs of the earlier era. Windowboxes stand empty and falling apart and a watering system is likely no longer functioning. An decades old wooden gutter hung from the eaves of our building with holed rotted through while others had been replaced at some point. The pool was non-functioning, but that may be a lingering COVID precaution.
Other amenities were good. The WiFi worked well, the in-room coffee was fine and our fridge was cold. The cable package is comprehensive so, although we aren't TV watchers, we had lots of fodder for exhausted zoning out. The hot breakfast was good. The staff kept everything topped up and the selection was very complete with eggs, bacon, waffles, bread, yogurt, fruit cocktail, cereals, juices etc. We left the motel every morning stuffed to the gills and topped up with coffee.
Overall our experience was good. The Ramada met our needs, but others with more finicky standards may be disappointed in a place that has seen better days. The owners need to either pony-up some money to renovate the place or cash in on the booming up-island real estate...
Read moreFirstly, I must mention the incredible lady who runs the breakfast. Our first day my 2 year old fell and hit her face on the cement - this lovely human being must have seen what happened and immediately came out to check on her. She also grabbed her an ice pack, some extra ice and even a small toy to help calm her down. I wish I would have gotten her name, because her and the breakfast were the best part of our stay!
Otherwise, the rest of our experience was only ok. Upon check in, we found that our room was not the room I had expected when I booked - this was blamed on a secondary booking site, and was that there was nothing they could do to amend the issue.
The room was not as clean as I would expect a room to be. Something had been spilled all down the wall beside the night table, the ceiling in the bathroom looked like it hadn't been washed in a while, there was garbage between the mattress and the box spring. The shower head and faucet in the tub did not run independently of each other, so when you turned on the tap you had water running out of both, and it looked like it had been that way for a good period of time.
Halfway through our 5 night stay, I asked if the cleaners could come in for a quick tidy (empty the garbages, make the beds up etc) I was told that as long as there were no personal items on the beds it would be no issue. Imagine our disappointment when we arrived back and the bed sheets were thrown back haphazardly, and the rest of the room hadn't been touched.
The room smelled like an ashtray. I'm not sure if it used to be a smoking room and still smells stale, or if it was because the neighboring room spent a majority of thier day outside smoking weed and cigarettes and the smoke poured into our room. Which brings me to my last point...
This hotel only has air conditioning in a few select rooms- the one we were in did not. Because we were there during a heat wave, we had no option to close the patio door to keep out the smoke. One evening it was 30 degrees in our room - the sliding door and a fan were our only saving grace.
This is the first time I have ever left a review on a hotel. In the past few month I've found the service at many of the hotels atrocious - unfortunately this stay was the straw that broke the...
