From the moment I walked into Canterra Suites Hotel, I knew I was in for a truly unique experience... the kind that sticks with you long after checkout, possibly in the form of a stress rash.||||I had barely crossed the lobby before the front desk clerk descended into full Code Red over the placement of my luggage near the fire exit. She looked at me like I’d personally planned to set the building ablaze using my duffel bag. My suitcase, apparently, was an active safety threat.||||Things only improved from there. After getting to my room, I was informed (surprise!) I might be evicted because the credit card holder wasn’t staying with me. Accused of lying, grilled like I was trying to sneak past airport security, and made to explain personal circumstances I shouldn’t have had to—including that I was fleeing a domestic violence situation. Her response?||“This is a hotel, not a shelter.”||Which is wild, because I hadn’t realized basic human decency was considered a luxury amenity at Canterra.||||I had planned on going to the hospital and filing a police report, but I was genuinely afraid I wouldn’t be let back in. You know it’s a five-star experience when you're afraid to leave the building.||||As a bonus, I found a mystery pill tucked inside my pillowcase. The turndown service here appears to be sponsored by “accidental pharmaceuticals.” I didn’t take it. But I thought about it.||||And when I left my phone charger behind, I called the front desk every day for four days. Each time I got a verbal shrug. Finally, someone told me, “Oh, someone else is in the room now.” So… congrats to them. They win a charger and possibly a small white pill.||||If you enjoy being treated with suspicion, judgment, and the emotional warmth of a Soviet border crossing, Canterra Suites Hotel is the perfect escape. Otherwise? Escape literally...
Read moreWhen I arrived, I barely had time to check in before the front desk clerk nearly had a panic attack—not because of anything urgent, but because my bags were briefly near the fire exit. The tone was instantly hostile, like I had personally endangered the entire building with my suitcase.
Things escalated fast. After heading up to my room, I was informed that I might be kicked out because the credit card holder wasn’t staying with me. I was accused of lying, and when I mentioned (in passing!) that I was dealing with a domestic violence situation, the response was: “This is a hotel, not a shelter.” I don’t know if that was supposed to be company policy or just plain human cruelty, but it was something.
I meant to go to the hospital and file a police report, but I was too scared I wouldn’t be let back in. Not a great feeling when you’re already vulnerable.
As a bonus, I found a random pill on my duvet—no note, no explanation, just a free pharmaceutical surprise.
When I left my phone charger behind, I called the front desk every day for four days. No one could give me an answer. Today they finally said someone else was in the room now. So… I guess it’s theirs now?
The building is technically standing, and the bed exists. That’s about the best I can say.

Read moreI had the pleasure of staying at the Canterra suites for 6 months while on a work contract in Edmonton. There are not enough wonderful things I can say to describe my stay. I would have to start with the staff who by the end of my stay felt like family. They truly took such amazing care of me and were always available and responsive. The location was terrific, right in the heart of downtown Edmonton with easy access to transit, restaurants and other attractions. It was also right next to a beautiful park and steps to a grocery store. Walking distance to the Rogers stadium. The suites were clean and well equipped for a comfortably stay with a full kitchen and in suite washer and dryer in each unit. Overall, I would highly recommend considering Canterra for your Edmonton stay. Short or long term, you cant go wrong. Thank you again to the wonderful staff at Canterra. You...
