Overall, we had a great experience in Rossland and at the Josie, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to plan a trip to Red Mountain. The Josie offers one of the best ski-in-ski-out experiences, for some of the best ski terrain of any resort. However, as a hotel, several aspects need to be addressed in order for it to deliver Marriott standard quality of service.
First, the shuttle service (which is run by the city, not the hotel) is very confusing. We asked a hotel staff member for verification that we were reading the schedule correctly- he confirmed that the last pickup time at the location we were wanting to go to was at 6:33pm to return to the hotel. When the shuttle arrived for our return, the driver told us he wasn't going back to the hotel, he was continuing his loop through downtown and shutting down for the night. Since the city has no taxi's or ride share services, we had to walk back to the hotel along the highway in the dark. If we had been further downtown, I don't know what we would have done to get back. It is extremely disappointing and frustrating that hotel staff isn't knowledgeable about a service that is clearly a necessity for guests. This can't be the first time someone has asked for assistance navigating the shuttle system. When we asked to speak to the manager after our walk back, we were told that there's no manager on duty.
Housekeeping is very inconsistent. Only our bed was re-made the first day, only our towels were exchanged the second, no one came on the third, and we actually received full service on the forth.
Basic things were overlooked- no soap/paper towels in public restrooms, no water in gym, hallways cluttered with dirty room service trays...
Upon arrival, we parked on the side of the hotel to check in and ask about parking. It clearly isn't a space for long term parking- it even has a 10 minute unloading sign. I stayed in the car so our cars wouldn't be alone. An attendant from Red Mountain came over and told me we can't park there. He was nice about it, and I explained the obvious- that we were only checking in. As my party returned to our cars from checking in, someone from the hotel was walking over to tell us we can't stay parked there. It's very rude for guests to be harassed about this. It's a huge, empty space, that's not being utilized. If it's that big of a deal to whoever the over-controlling higher power is, the area needs to be blocked off permanently, and the 10 minute parking sign needs to be removed.
For positives, the restaurant/bar staff are all very nice and hard working. During breakfast, it's obviously that the staff is working hard to stay caught up and satisfy guests. The staff at equipment storage are also very friendly and helpful. Beds are very comfortable, and rooms are spacious and nice. It's a fantastic area to be in.
With the exception of our issue with the shuttle, everything else isn't that big of a deal. I want to give an accurate review of my thoughts for constructive criticism, not complaints. We want to return, and will most likely return next season, and I'll happily change my review if operation feels more established...
Read moreThis is a small but lovely ski in/ ski out hotel on the Red Mountain. It reminds me of my younger days when I worked at a similar setting in Japan.
We arrived in the evening of Christmas Eve for our Christmas break. All the staff we met, from the reception, ski valet, valet parking, to restaurant, were genuinely friendly. We have stayed at Westin Whistlers last few ski seasons, what we experienced at The Josie was way better. We overheard some staff saying Trudeau was there earlier during our stay, but it did not affect our time there. We did not know until we heard that and saw video on YouTube.
The lobby was very Christmassy decorated and we loved it.
Toiletry was great, too. However, housekeepers did not come to our room for the first two nights and we had to go ask the reception for refills on the way out for dinner on the third night. We guessed they must have been very busy on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Food and breakfast at the restaurant were not amazing but good enough. We were offered to make special coffee and Chai Latte. They did not have Matcha Latte and Chai Latte was not properly made, but again it was good enough, no complaint.
True that there was no spa, no swimming pool at The Josie, and it was on the slope of a ski resort. So, if you don’t ski, you don’t have not much to do at the hotel. There was a small gym that we used once. However, we found enough stuff to do in Rossland and Trail and a quiet time was exactly what we wanted for our break.
Speaking of a quiet time, the only problem was we could hear the hallway or next time often. It was not so loud that we could overhear the conversation, but the noise could annoy those who are light sleepers. However, our room faced the slope and it was fun to watch your family/ friends skiing. They could not see you through your window from outside though, so there was privacy.
Another minor issue was there was no microwave in our room. It was slightly inconvenient for us on the Christmas Day when everything was closed and we wish we could heat up some food.
It took us some time to find the hotel as this was our first visit, and Google map told us that we arrived but we found ourselves at the back of another hotel a bit downhill. We had to call and ask for instructions.
Apparently, there was shuttle bus service but we did not use it as we drove around.
We will definitely stay here again next time we...
Read moreThis is a tough review since it is hard to separate the hotel from the Redstone Resort experience, but I will do my best.||Hotel is very nice, right on the ski slopes with beautiful rooms, though a bit small. Staff was outstanding and was very responsive to any needs we had. Restaurant in the hotel is open for dinner only and we ate there twice, the slope side menu is a much better option that they serve from 4-5 PM, while dinner from 5-9 was OK and maybe a bit overpriced, though the staff and service were outstanding. Lots if construction going on around the hotel, so be aware, and not much is paved, so it is very dusty. finally, it has no hot tub. Very strange on a ski slope. ||To understand the area, you have to realize that the ski area is a 5 minute highway drive from the town of Rossland, which is another five minute highway drive to the golf course. ||The ski resort has the this hotels restaurant and one other (a bistro) that is only open for lunch/dinner Thur-Sun, The resort area has no options for breakfast other than an in-room option by the hotel for $16, and it is only available after 7 AM. So, you can't walk someplace to grab a quick breakfast. the ski resort area also does not have any type on little store to buy items.||The town has a couple of breakfast options (again, not really someplace you can walk to), but most of the town shuts down by 6 PM, so dinner options are limited as well. The golf course also, amazingly, does not have a breakfast option. the golf course is an amazing play, and well worth it if you are a golfer, holes 9-17 are some of the most fun holes I have every played.||This area has a desperate need for coordination between the ski area, the town, and the golf course. No shuttle exists so you have to be in your car constantly. They should be running shuttles in the summer every 30 minutes from 6am to 7 PM and this would make all tie together and allow a persons car to not move once you have arrived. But, since so much construction is going on, they may have plans for correcting some of these things.||We will be fascinated to come back in a couple years to see if they have addressed some of these gaps. Right now, it is really nice, but just too spread out with too many things hard...
