Summer in Whistler: 99% of People Don‘t Know These Hidden Gems!

Summer in Whistler: 99% of People Don‘t Know These Hidden Gems!

Great place to hike in summer! We did the Alpine loop, Overlord trail, and Lakeside loop. Starting with the Alpine loop, it was fairly simple, and we noticed lots of marmots around! They came right next to the trail with their babies and lots of people were taking photos. The views were nice walking through the subalpine environment, and some wildflowers around. Some bugs around but not tons. Later on, we reached Overlord trail where we walked through. The views from Overlord trail are amazing, but also the meadows. There were a lot of wildflowers and meadows on certain parts of the trail, and lots of small butterflies around! There were a mediocre amount of bugs so bring bug spray, there's some horseflies. After Overlord trail, we hiked on the Lakeside loop which brings you to Blackcomb lake! This lake was amazing and the environment and scenery was just spectacular, meadows of wildflowers around, interspersed rocks, and the glacial fed lake sitting below the mountain peaks. There's a nice bench and some people were swimming. Still some bugs around on this trail, but not as much as Overlord I'd say. Overall, a great hike for a nice alpine lake and isn't as intensive as many other alpine lake hikes around southern BC.

Officially opened on December 4, 1980, Blackcomb is the fall-line alternative to Whistler. Blackcomb has the higher official peak (outside resort patrolled terrain) & a staggering 1609 meters of vertical, but overall less acreage than Whistler. It became a popular snowboarding mountain in the 90's with the terrain park, halfpipe, & all that fall-line terrain. Blackcomb also offers summer hiking & sightseeing in the alpine plus the Ascent Trails with optional download-only tickets. Access areas are via the Village (Excalibur gondola), Upper Village (Blackcomb gondola), & Base II (Excalibur gondola). It is "connected" to Whistler Mountain at Whistler village base (bottom of the Excalibur gondola) & via the Peak to Peak gondola in the sub-alpine.
