Our stay at Cabanas Rapa Nui Orito was reasonable and basically as expected. Accommodations on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are certainly more challenging than most places we have visited. A significant number of hotels simply do not exist on the island. The main choices are cabanas or guest houses similar to what we ended up choosing.||||Reservations at Cabanas Rapa Nui Orito were made through a series of emails. Since we were staying only two nights, I decided virtually any accommodation would be satisfactory. Since we were traveling as a family of four (2 adults and 2 children), the main option at Cabanas Rapa Nui Orito was their “family suite” which cost 92,000 CLP (around $140 USD) per night including breakfast. Finalizing the reservation was painless as they did not even need a credit card hold. They did emphasize for us to “please” not cancel at the last minute.||||Arrival at IPC (the airport) was chaotic. Luckily, two representatives from Cabanas Rapa Nui Orito were there to help us with the transfer to the property. The transfers are included with the room rate. Arrival took less than 5 minutes. Check-in was even quicker. Unfortunately, we had reserved a Suzuki 4x4 through the hotel but were told it had been rented to somebody else. So, instead of us exploring the island immediately, we had to wait as the hotel staff scrambled to get another 4x4 rented from one of the main rental car companies in town. Needless to say, we wasted around 90 minutes of prime exploring time to get a car which had been told to us would be available on our arrival. ||||The family suite at Cabanas Rapa Nui Orito included a double bed as well as a total of four additional beds in bunk bed form. There was a small kitchen area with a small refrigerator. The bathroom had a tub shower and small vanity. A very small television sat on a dresser. Oh, and there is a floor fan. That is about it. Fairly Spartan but fulfils the need for a couple nights. There is no air conditioning whatsoever. So, I would not describe my nights as being comfortable in what is otherwise a fairly stuffy room. ||||Breakfast is brought to your room every morning. You are given a few choices, but otherwise it is a fairly standard mix of breads, meats, cheeses, and fruits. Everybody in my family enjoyed the breakfasts that were provided.||||A few peculiarities include around a dozen signs in the room telling you what “not” to do. Don’t put toilet paper in the toilet, please use the garbage can. Don’t break or steal our dishware or glasses, here is a pricelist of what you owe us if we find any missing or damaged. Don’t take our towels to the beach. Just seemed a bit excessive to us.||||Also, the property does not provide bottled water. You can buy a bottle for around $3 in the lobby. Hard to say if it is worth risking. When someone asked if they could drink out of the tap, the front desk clerk said “yes” but that one could boil it as well. Not sure where that leaves most people. We stuck with bottled water!||||The property is fairly well situated to explore the island. Since it is on the main road to the quarry and points north, you can easily go watch sunrise with the moai or visit the beaches quickly.||||Although Cabanas Rapa Nui Orito does advertise free internet, that term is a vast exaggeration of what is actually usable at their property. First, the router did not have coverage to our family suite which was near the end of the main building. Second, even when I sat in the lobby, I would sit for 15 minutes just trying to load up a couple of work emails with no luck whatsoever. Perhaps one should just enjoy Easter Island and ignore the whole idea of being connected to the internet while there. However, if you do have something critical, the poor/nonexistent internet is a problem.||||Check-out was smooth as I paid in cash. Credit cards are accepted but incur a 5% surcharge from the hotel. Transfer back to the airport was quick and concluded our trip to Rapa Nui.||||In summary, Cabanas Rapa Nui Orito offers an entirely reasonable place to stay for a few days visit. Certainly, there were a few issues (i.e. virtually nonexistent internet, not having our 4x4 ready on arrival, etc.) but the experience was well worth the...
Read moreI booked this stay online the day before my arrival based on the reviews and the fact that there is airport pick up. Arriving from a night flight, I was looking for a hassle-free experience. I took extra care to also send an email directly to the reception withall the details of my arrival. The result was: ||- no airport pick up||- the receptionnist was completly clueless regarding my stay, and asked me to check my reservation. When he realized that I was correct, he stated that it was not 'his' problem (!!!), but mine. He told me that they check their emails once in a blue moon, that I should not expect the same service as on the mainland, and that 'his' guests (implying I am not one..) book 'weeks in advance'. When I told him that in such case his hotel should not make use of online reservation platforms which provide instant confirmation, he was again clueless. Bottom line, don't stay there if you haven't booked 'weeks in advance' .. else you will face a kind of 'WTF' attitude, with no decent customer service to say the least. The owner apologized on the same evening for the behaviour of the receptionnist, but it was too late. I decided not to extend my stay for the remainig 6 days, and found another place with super friendly owners, 10 min walk from city center, and for... half the price Cabanas Orito is asking for.||||On another note, these Cabanas are one hour walk return trip from the city center (car rental is ~80-100 USD per day for an automatic small car. Taxi is about 15 USD return trip). The bungalow itself was ok. Breakfast is not served before 8.30am, else you need to get it the night before and store it...
