I camped here at the beginning of July when it's pretty hot during the day and night.
There is a long stretch of beach here where you can pitch a tent, along with multiple containers for litter.
There is also a public toilet, though I was hesitant to use it due to the terrifying number and size of the mosquitoes that inhabited it. Outside the toilet are two taps of which only one worked, but that one had a strong water flow. You can use this water to fill a bottle and then pour it over yourself as a makeshift shower.
Around the toilet area there is some less sandy and flatter ground. There is a path with various exits off it to enclosed, more sheltered spots if you think the wind might pick up and your tent needs some protection.
Also on the beach are a few restaurants where you can order food, drinks, buy tickets for the boat trip back to Sai Kung and also hire various camping paraphernalia.
You can hike in from Sai Wan pavilion via Sai Wan beach or from Pak Tam Au. The latter route has a concrete path the entire way so if you had a trolley you could drag it behind you... though the route is over 6km and includes two hills.
The beach was fairly clean when I went though at weekends it is busy and there can be a lot of plastic debris floating in the water, which is...
Read moreReally enjoyed our night of camping on Ham Tin. We took a taxi from Sai Kung town centre to Sai Wan Pavillion and embarked on a 90 min hike from there (head towards Sai Wan Village and continue on the trail). The restrooms at Ham Tin are currently under renovation but there are portables with flushing toilets and some running water. You can book a speedboat back to Sai Kung from a few different vendors. They charge between 160-180HKD (one way) depending on whether it is a holiday or not. Tents and some camping supplies also available for rent from Hoi Fung restaurant/shop. The third beach (Tai Wan) is only a 10-15 min, flat walk up the jungle path.
Make sure you secure your food before camping overnight as the wild boars inevitably descended onto the beach to forage in the middle...
Read moreBeautiful beach! We were there on a Wednesday in June and there was only one other group of people camping. It is quite secluded but has a little village with a delicious restaurant and friendly people. It also has a public bathroom which is quite good and has a hose to wash yourself. You can get there by hiking or by boat. We hiked in and took the speedboat out. Just be wary though, at the moment there are some landslides in the area so what should have been a 1.5 hour hike ended up taking around 3.5 hours because the taxi couldn't take us as close as usual. By it was still a good hike and all the construction workers we came across were very friendly. Also the speedboat only leaves the beach once a day at around 5pm, so factor that into...
