Overall: very good exerpience, particularly as a hostel. Would recommend to others.Pros:- Friendly, communicative atmosphere with staff and other guests, essential fot a good hostel- bilingual service, mostly at front desk but elsewhere too- regular weekly events- cheap and convenient postcards for sale in the lobby to send home or have for a keep sake- rooms have sufficient amenities- food and drink option variety and affordability- excellent location near cuihu (pretty lake district with good food options nearby) and the kunming laojie (old street)- some basic things like water and convient noodles are sold at fair prices at the front desk- information about tours and travel available in the lobby- elevator available to access most rooms, though some stairs will be necessary in the lobbyCons:- some of the weekly events didn't seem to occur at all- cleanliness wasn't perfect: some areas of the cafe have lots of flies and some parts of the room, such as the bathroom, had a bit of grime- peanuts on a caesar salad? no! (I'm allergic to peanuts and didn't think to ask if they put peanuts on a caesar salad because it just isn't normally done)- the prepaid breakfast options are too limited. some additional options for what toppings could go in the noodles or what fruit or jam you receive with the western breakfast would help a lot- quality of some food items are just so so- occaisionally a little noisy in the rooms (but that's just because a group of kids stayed nearby + it's a hostel so it's almost to...
Read moreI recently spent two nights at this accommodation, and while there were not many foreigners around, I still found it to be a decent experience.Upon arrival, I received a coupon, which was a nice touch, but I found that the minimum spending requirement made it less useful for solo travelers like myself. I had requested a bottom bunk but ended up with a top one, and I found the bed to be quite hard. However, the provided curtains added a nice level of privacy. On the plus side, they offer lockers, towels, and slippers, which is convenient. The bathroom, however, could use a bit more attention as it needed cleaning, and I noticed that the shower had a leak.Overall, considering the price, I can't really complain too much. The staff at the front desk were friendly and spoke English, which made communication easy. Just a heads-up: there are two flights of stairs, and you'll need to walk through the restaurant/bar area to access the lift to the rooms. All in all, it’s a budget-friendly option that meets...
Read moreCheck in takes some time, some staff speak some English. Via some stairs you reach 2F where the restaurant / bar is, affordable breakfast, lunch or dinner options. Also various soft drinks or beer for sale. Via an inner place you reach the elevator. Room (503) is good, plenty of space, great beds and shower. Staff is friendly and helpful.||||The hostel is conveniently located about a 5-minute walk from Green Lake Park.||Nice for morning walk, or afternoon coffee at Yunn. In the immediate vicinity are several local shops for daily necessities (yogurt, bread, fruit, etc) also several restaurants. At about 20-25 minutes walk is 'Old Kunming' with various tea houses, street food, coffee and restaurants. My favorite is Max Coffee, various good coffee, lots of choice, super good service!||||*My stay at 5D/4N didn't always clean the room. Perhaps a point for improvement!||Kunming Upland Hostel is definitely recommended, and a place where I...
