Booked a five-night stay recently based on the trust of the Shangri-la brand. Overall, it is OK because we were mostly out and about, but not the usual Shangri-la experience. ||Location—geographically it’s within city centre, probably thirty minutes’ drive from train station, airport, and all major tourist attractions. The metro station is right downstairs. However, it’s not great for tourists because there is almost nothing on the street if you want to take a stroll. 5 five-minute walk to the old Kunming hotel and Holiday Inn, maybe another few minutes’ walk to the Kunming Plaza 66. Purely walk, nothing much to see. ||The room—There are three different room types. I booked the Jen Cozy type on Shangri-La’s official website and asked for a high-floor room. Upon arrival, we were told by the receptionist that the high floors are undergoing renovation and will be noisy, so we had to stay on a lower floor. Furthermore, the room size and fixtures are the same for the Jen Now type and Jen Cozy. The two things to justify the nearly double room rate are: 1) a few drinks in the mini bar and 2) a bag of free wet wash laundry. The hotel's fee is CNY 99 for it. However, I had to ask reception to take off from the final bill besides of my additional laundry bills. The room is functional but very small for more than one person. The wash basin can not even fit into the bathroom. The sofa is impractical for that room size. It’s better to have two separate chairs with a tiny table in between. If so, at least two people can sit together. Not one on the uncomfortable sofa and another one have to sit on bed. The shower head was not set up at a right angle. We had to put something to make sure it doesn’t move with water pressure. ||F&B—called room service and had breakfast downstairs. Room service came in boxes like street delivery. We have been told that our room rate does not include any breakfast, and because of our long stay, the hotel cannot give us any free breakfast. It’s Ok, and we bought breakfast vouchers from the Shangri-la membership club with a little bit of a discount. Breakfast has enough offerings to suit the domestic market but is slightly lacking for international tourists. Ordered five poached eggs in total on three different mornings, and only one came out all right. The coffee machine coffee is a shame for a province that claims fame for coffee. Table cleanness and culinary draws require further attention. We had to clean food crumbles and find things from another table ourselves. ||Service—The service team is friendly but gives the impression of lacking experience. Service doesn’t seem to come naturally for quite a few of them, and they seemed concerned about doing things wrong and customers may take advantage of the hotel. However, special credit goes to the lady who carries a basket and cleans the breakfast area and the wellness centre team. They served with smiles and a willingness to help. ||Furthermore, we experienced construction noise from the above floor and next-door building. Also had short time power cutoffs. | |Overall, I think it’s a functional hotel for travelling workers who have things to do with nearby government departments. But for tourists, especially international ones, maybe there are better...
Read moreThe metro station is just in front of the hotel although I did not use the metro. The atmosphere around the hotel is a busy street and there are a variety of shops around the area. Immediately next to the hotel is a building where there are many shops selling sports related items. There were also interesting shops such as those selling tea across the road from the hotel. Behind the hotel, there is a huge book store and a convenience store. There is also a modern major shopping center within a short 10 minutes walk away where there are international branded retail shops, a cinema, supermarket and local branded restaurants. The hotel is also a short taxi ride to the old Kunming street or the pedestrian mall where there is much to see. ||||The rooms at Jen Kunming are modern and clean. It has an mechanical drawn day and night curtains that you can adjust by pressing the buttons, wireless charging and a filtered water machine. In terms of room size, it is much smaller compared to those offered by the main hotel Shangri-la. However, this is made up by its pricing.||||Currently there are renovations being done at the hotel where the bigger Shangri-la hotel will open later. I did not experience any noise on the 9th floor where I stayed. ||||I had the opportunity to stay at Jen Kunming in October 2025. I arrived early in the morning and there was someone who was able to help with my luggage from the taxi to the reception. The reception staff was warm and friendly. The staff was also very helpful to find and bring my parcel I had ordered earlier to my room. ||||The housekeeping also noted my request for the extra pillows and water in my reservation request . Housekeeping was always quick in getting the extra towels or shavers for me when I requested for it over the telephone. ||||I also spent some time at the first floor restaurant for breakfast and was impressed with the thoughtfulness and service of the restaurant staff. There is also a dedicated staff member that made sure the guests were looked after. I was impressed she was able to remember my drinks preference and offered to get a small spoon for my fruits. The breakfast spread was good and the food was hot. There were "live" stations where you could order eggs, noodles and porridge. ||||Thank you to Jen Kunming for a wonderful and...
Read moreChecked in this hotel for six nights.||The staff there were extremely courteous and welcoming, always wore a smile to help.||The room has a very funny set up. The toilet and shower are cramped together in a small space and the washing basin is outside this area next to the drinking water machine. You can image after you have completed your call for nature, you use your dirty hand to push the door handle to reach the washing basin to wash your hand, without mentioning that the toilet handle is full of germs. The shower door is opening at the wrong direction and everytime you leave the shower area, you washed clean body will touch the toilet.||I have reflected this issue to the senior management and the duty manager Ace Cheung has been very kind to offer me some solutions.||I have tried the restaurant twice for breakfast and dinner. The varieties are plentiful but most of the food were lukewarm. They offer a steak at dinner but by the time it was delivered to the table, it was again pretty cool and I thought it was a waste of the materials. I think this is the worst Shangri-la restaurant I have ever visited so far. No wonder the restaurant was quite deserted at my visits.||Overall this hotel is at a very good location with all the spots nearby, and with a team of wonderful staff but is disastrously killed by the room...
