Just spent three nights in this hostel in Shanghai. I came with one other American friend, and one Chinese friend. We were all extremely pleased with the hostel. ||||As for it being hidden, that's definitely true! However, not impossible to find. Directions on your phone will take you there just fine. There's a lit up sign at the end of the alleyway that you need to walk down that is always lit up and says "International Hostel", you just walk a few hundred feet down the alleyway and at the end is the Hostel. It's a safe alleyway, even late at night. I didn't find this to be a problem, and what do you expect if the word "hidden" is in the name?! ||||The staff was extremely friendly upon check in, and all throughout our stay. They speak great English and are nothing but helpful and accommodating. ||||We stayed in a mixed dorm with 6 beds. The first night it was just the three of us, but the next two nights we had three chinese men (who also did not know one another) sleep in our room. It was fun to make new friends, and if you're easily adaptable and willing to just stick to your own living space and keep your stuff fairly tidy, having a mixed dorm wasn't a bad experience at all.||||They give you fresh sheets to put on your bed, a pillowcase, and a cover for the comforter. The pad on the bed was EXTREMELY comfortable, especially for China. Nice fluffy pillow. No complaints about the sleeping arrangement. ||||However, if you like your stuff to be spread out, want your own clean bathroom space, and don't like sleeping around strangers, it would probably be wise to get your own room, or make sure you're only in a dorm with people you know. Otherwise, a super fun and unique experience, whilst still being super comfortable. ||||I also highly recommend the breakfast here!! We got the classic American breakfast, and it came with a free coffee. It was one of the most authentically American foods I've had in China so far, and I've lived here for three months. Sooooo yummy, and totally worth the price when you convert it back to American dollars. The coffee was yummy too.||||Additionally, the lounge is a super fun place to hang out in. There's charging ports everywhere, drinks, a bar, great music, and just a cool vibe. Plus a cute kitty!||||Overall, highly recommend this hostel. No complaints at all, and made our stay super...
Read moreFor like 80 to 90 Yuan per night that I was going to pay, I was really "pleasantly" surprised to find this modern-styled & newer-looking place (I would guess it to be no more than like 15 years old) in its own walled compound with "neat & clean" grounds; and yes the inside (meaning the room) was just as great with "fairly-big" lockers (kind of hi-tech that you open by scanning your room key) and the "ensuite" bathroom that I had to share with only the people in my 8-bed dorm room (and not with everyone else on the floor!); also here the laundry is free of charge (including the detergent) although there's no dryer (there are clotheslines on the roof but yes you need a non-rainy day for that). ||||And quite conveniently for meals & miscellaneous (toiletry items like soap & toothpaste), at just about a 5-minute walk away (go out the lane and turn left) are a number of small restaurants (there's one where I regularly had dinner which cost only like 15 to 20 Yuan for a filling meal), a "medium-sized" supermarket & a small grocery store, but do keep in mind all those places are closed early in the morning.||||Coming by metro, Pudong Ave. Station (Line 4) is where to get off from which it's just a 15-to-20-minute walk (a right turn onto Pudong Ave. after coming out of the station followed by about a 15-minute walk then a right turn into the small lane which I'm quite sure is called Lane 832 as the sign says at the entrance to the lane, and you'll see the place to your left at the end of the lane); if arriving by plane at Hongqiao or Pudong Airports or by train at Hongqiao Station, take Line 2 to Century Ave. Station where you change to Line 4 to get to Pudong Ave. Station (just the next station from Century Ave. going counterclockwise since Line 4 is...
Read moreThe place itself it’s a nice one, I think the problem is who manages this place. I felt they don’t care as much about the place, the service or to put in effort . First of all it says international in the name , but maybe one of the receptionist (who doesn’t work everyday )speaks English. One morning I was asked by the receptionist if I could speak Chinese since he can’t understand English. This place is mostly a local dormitory where people live long term. I liked the garden area but couldn’t enjoy because their internet was horrible all 6 days I was there. Other people staying there had the same issue. The free washing and rooftop clothes drying was amazing .The room had no window, it smelled like wet mold and there was mold too. They had a dehumidifier but they never cleaned it or bother to turn it on. You have to put on your own sheets and then at check out take them to reception. The mattress was very thin, I felt the wood bed frame. The cleaning was never done right, never a fresh feel after, still seeing dirt on the floor and toilet smelled. The location it’s far from any touristic attraction. It’s located in the financial district, so even hard to find a supermarket or 7-11, or a place to get water since this place has just hot water for free. It’s a quiet place for sure, 10 min walk from metro 14 and 4 . I used the bike a lot which was convenient, nice ride by the water and very good bike lanes. Overall it could be better if the reception would be helpful, especially for foreigners with tips where to go what to do, where to eat , get SIM card etc. It’s not the place where you would meet lots of foreigners because I think they book on the other side of the river by people’s park...
