Los Cocos is wonderful. What a fantastic place.
Getting there from Cartagena takes a good 1.5ish hours, and some of the road isn't paved. However, the Villa staff arranged transportation for us with Carlos, who is a truly wonderful human, and we had a great experience getting to and from the Villa.
The Villa was a perfect place our little family (Grandma, kiddo, and I) to relax. Our room was nice and the facilities are in great shape. Access to a kayak and a paddle board was a nice bonus.
Judith is a wonderful hostess, and, along with Carlos and Keiner, goes above and beyond to make sure that guests have a superb experience. The food is great and you really have all you need at the Villa.
The Villa is not by a blue, sandy beach but instead in an area with mangroves. It has some sandy access to the sea though. I honestly think this is a plus because it results in a relaxing, safe, and quiet experience compared to the noisier traditional Colombian beach with lots of sellers. The water is still delicious and we enjoyed both the pool and the sea every day.
You can still go enjoy a few hours at a nearby blue, sandy beach called Agua Azul about 10 minutes away by boat. Judith arranged everything, and the transportation costs were reasonable ($30,000/person) and included chairs and a table. We felt respected at Agua Azul since the Villa has a standing relationship with one of the bars and they allow no funky business. So, we were able to have that sandy, caribbean beach experience for a while, while also enjoying the peace, safe, and calm vibe of the Villa.
Something to keep in mind is that the island in front of the hotel (probably a 25-30 min paddle from the Villa) is a party place and so it can get so noise that you hear it quite a bit at the Villa.
We absolutely hope to return to Villa los Cocos as...
Read moreVery remote location on Baru. Definitely use their recommended transportation-4 wheel drive needed to get through muddy sections of the road. No boat access from Cartagena.
The property is beautiful and the food and service is great. However there is no beach access so we had to take a boat to nearby Playa Azul, and the next day they helped us arrange a tour of the Rosario Islands with the hotel next door.
It is very peaceful and charming there, but it is a journey to get there, too much for just 1 overnight.
Also, we were a bit unsettled by the local men of Baru who will try to forcefully stop your vehicle to have you pay them to “guide” you to your hotel. They are very aggressive, and although you shouldn’t stop, they will grab on to your vehicle and try to intimidate you. I think the local hotels and rentals should address this issue as it can be quite frightening...
