Hotel Torreón — Hotel in Popayán

When I was figuring out where to stay, I picked this one because the price looked like a steal. I also looked it up on google maps to get a sense of whether it was in a sketchy neighbourhood. It's next to a field and a big, industrial looking building, so I reasoned that it would be fairly quiet and private.||||It turns out that it is indeed in a sketchy neighbourhood. Though the distance from the downtown is short, I hitched a ride in a bus on the nearest busy street, then took a taxi back at night (fortunately both modes of transportation where cheap). Though the view was usually peaceful, I saw at least 3 guys relieving themselves against the wall surrounding the field. I also saw a few people staggering along the sidewalk, and one evening smelled marijuana that someone was smoking below.||||I had no complaint about the room itself. It was basic, with simple, dated décor. That doesn't bother me. However, the acoustics left something to be desired. On 2 occasions I heard the cleaning staff in the common area outside, noisily wringing a mop and shuffling buckets around. The first occasion was 9:30 at night as I was settling in, the second was at 7:30 in the morning, which woke me up. I also clearly heard the muffled tv noises and running water from the neighbouring rooms.||||It wasn't the worst place that I stayed, but it wasn't the quiet, private little haven that I hoped for. Hotel en zona muy peligrosa, tanto que la policía está permanentemente circulando porque al parecer hay lo que llamamos "fumones" o personas drogadictas cerca. Y me topé con uno que perseguía a mi amiga con malas intenciones. Es barato pero no recibes desayuno, la habitación es básica, tienes que subir escaleras grandes con todas tus maletas y la cochera es reducida no entran mas de tres carros. Está en un sector tenebroso y peligroso, si usted entra no puede volver a salir, menos en la noche. Las habitaciones son diminutas, no tienen vista a ninguna parte, falta mantenimiento, no hay restaurante, ni mesas, ni zonas comunes donde usted se pueda sentar, de la entrada directo a la diminuta habitación. Luego de alojarnos aquí y recorrer la ciudad nos dimos cuenta que había alternativas mucho mejores al mismo precio. La ciudad esta muy linda y vale la pena ir...
