I had the pleasure of staying at the Macondo in a private room for 4 nights as my base in San Gil. The hostel is just set back enough from the main square to be out of earshot of the ruckus of the main streets, yet easily accessible. ||||One of the highlights of my stay was Macondo's ability to act as a de-facto excursion desk, co-ordinating all the extreme sports activities I wanted to take in during my stay. They truly made it easy and their staff are all very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. An added bonus was the cultural events arranged by the hostel, like Tejo Tuesday. ||||The room was pretty bog standard, yet clean and about what you would expect from a moderate to budget-priced accommodation. That said, if you are staying in your room in San Gil you are definitely doing it wrong...||||The two drawbacks I would note are the lack of AC (not uncommon) and some of the noise that came into my room from both the common area and the shared kitchen. I suggest bringing earplugs (but hey, if you are staying at a hostel you know the drill already). ||||Overall, the Macondo was a real pleasant surprise, and I ended up extending my stay there an extra day since I enjoyed the area so much. Would stay here again...
Read moreCan't say enough good things about Sean and the team in Macondo Hostel. We stayed with them for a total of 8 nights over two visits and were made to feel at home from the minute we arrived. ||The hostel is super clean, has good rooms (we were in 3 different ones), comprehensive kitchen facilities and a lovely jacuzzi/ garden area that is absolutely perfect to chill out in during any down time. ||The hostel is also the epicentre for activities in the area, so no matter what you are looking to do, they can sort you out. The guys also organise/ advise on free activities in the area (Tejo Tuesday, football, hikes, swimming holes etc) so great no matter your budget. ||The location is close to the main square but set back far enough to be chill, close to several good restaurants and coffee shops. ||At one point we both got a particularly rough stomach bug and the team made sure we were as comfortable as could be. In our twenty years of hostels around the world we've never been made to feel so at home as in Maconda so a massive "Thank you!" to...
Read moreMacondo Hostel is hands down one of the best hostels I’ve stayed at in Colombia! Everything was perfect, from the atmosphere to the activities and the incredible staff. It’s the ideal place to meet fellow travellers, socialise, and make the most of San Gil’s adventure scene.
Shaun and his team are absolute legends, super knowledgeable, always helpful, and constantly smiling. They make sure you’re sorted whether you want to chill or dive straight into the action. And speaking of action, the activities on offer are next level! From white-water rafting to paragliding, and my personal adrenaline highlight (or heart attack), bungee jumping!
The hostel itself is spotless, well-maintained, and has a great vibe. The dorms are spacious and comfortable, perfect for resting after a day full of adventure. And whatever you do, don’t miss out on Friday’s Family Curry Night—an amazing way to meet people and enjoy some delicious food!
If you’re coming to San Gil, staying at Macondo is a no-brainer. You...
