The pictures from this hotel must be AT LEAST 20 years old because this is not the hotel you will stay at. Every single “villa” looks old and dilapidated on the outside. The road down to the villas is crumbling. You pass many buildings, gates, decorations that are broken, crumbling, or rusted. I’m sure this place was gorgeous 30 years ago. If you don’t have a car you are out of luck unless you stay at the only villa on the same level as reception. Every other villa is down the steepest, slippery when went, set of sloped walkways. We stayed at probably the farthest down the hill and some inclines were 45°. The receptionist did offer to “get us a ride” to our villa because of our luggage however his “ride” was like 15 min away. We walked all the way with luggage. (In retrospect we left and checked into another hotel- Casa Del Rio, which had golf carts to get us to the rooms… Arenal should take some tips from this place). |Then we go to our room- “villa” 17. Smelled clean. Seemed clean. However everything is so worn. The curtains look like they are from the 70s and never been cleaned. There are rust and mold stains all over the bathroom. The furniture to sit in is outside plastic furniture. There is a loft with a bed that you would make a person you absolutely hate sleep in. Unfinished wood floor and dead bugs. We arrived after a 15 hour travel day and decided it was ok for the night. Then it got dark. And all of a sudden we were being attacked by bugs. Probably drawn to the light. I just have killed 10 bugs before we finally found how they were getting in. The back door wasn’t sealed and neither was the window in the bathroom. We ended up sealing with towels to make it through the night. Left 2 days early and I don’t even care I lost money. Being able to relax in my hotel room is more important. When we got into bed it felt dirty. Like the sheets hadn’t been changed. |Included breakfast was horrible too. Eggs cooked like rubber. You also are given very limited times to eat with no exceptions if you have an early tour. |Lastly, if you don’t have a car you’ll never get a taxi, tour companies don’t like to pick up here, and there’s nothing to eat near by. I knew this part going in so after our 15 hours travel day our private shuttle was kind enough to stop and a store for us to get ramen and yogurt for dinner! Luckily the fridge and microwave worked! |Do yourself a favor and stay...
Read moreI have very mixed feelings about this place. The good: the upgraded us to a lodge for free (we booked a standard room) because it was low season. The lodge was a highlight and my son had such a great time choosing between sleeping in the loft inside or the exterior loft (you reach it through outdoor stairs and it has a private entrance). It was a bit far from town, but I actually loved that because it was so beautiful and quiet and we just sat on the deck enjoying a jungle rainstorm. Also, they've recently hired a place called the Geckos to do their breakfasts and it was THE BEST food we had in Costa Rica. So so good. Also, we got a free visit to Misitico Hanging Bridges as a peace offering because they're doing construction right now and it was a bit noisy. I was happy with the trade!||The downsides: the cleanliness was questionable. The light switch in the bathroom and the legs on the bathroom vanity were coated with grime and my pillow smelled like sweat. Gag. Also, they didn't refill the soap in one of the bathrooms - good thing we had two.|The lodge bathrooms were so nice though. Huge windows and you could shower with them open because no one was nearby - just the jungle.|Lastly, I can't decide if this is a con or a pro... a howler monkey lives nearby and kept jumping on the metal roof and dropping stuff on the roof starting at about 4:45am each morning. It was amusing, but also made it a bit hard to sleep.||My biggest complaint is that there was NO POOL, even though they advertise this. I booked this lodge specifically so we would have a pool during down time. That was a big disappointment to not have one.||Mistico Hanging Bridges just bought this place and, like I mentioned, they're doing construction, so I think there is potential for it to be a really nice lodge in the...
Read moreThis "resort" is not what it advertises. Seriously, if you go by the pictures, you are straight-up being catfished. It reminded us of hot tub time machine, like it was in it's prime decades ago but has not been touched or cared for since. Our original room, # 3 was covered in black mold. I mean - it was on every surface, every wall, even the hair dryer cord. Some mold was clearly painted over and the mold had come back through. We brought this to the attention of the staff but there was nothing they could do the first night. I have asthma and sinus issues so I had to sleep in the car. The next morning they were helpful and gave us a bigger, slightly cleaner (but still moldy) room. The only reason I gave this 2 stars is because the staff did take action by getting us a better room, even though they reminded me over and over it's the rain forest so I should expect humid conditions. I am pretty tolerant of "not so nice" accommodations but that doesn't mean anyone should tolerate sleeping in dangerous conditions. Not really my idea of "well-being" |Overall the resort looks like at one point they tried the eco and wellness route but they just gave up years ago. We walked around to the "greenhouses" and they were just old tattered buildings with no plants. There were no gardens, no animals, it was just sad. |Perhaps the villas are better like some of the reviews say but don't stay in the main lodging area, seriously you...
