Review: La Fortuna Waterfall – A Must-Visit in the Arenal Region

If you’re in La Fortuna or the Arenal area, a visit to La Fortuna Waterfall is an absolute must. This spot is not only beautifully maintained and well-organized, but it also offers an incredible experience for those who love nature, waterfalls, and a bit of adventure.

The Hike Down & Back Up The biggest challenge here is the 500+ stairs leading down to the waterfall—and, of course, the climb back up. This is not for everyone, especially if you have knee issues or struggle with steep inclines. But if you’re up for the challenge, the reward is worth it!

Swimming at the Waterfall Unlike many waterfalls where swimming is prohibited, La Fortuna Waterfall allows visitors to take a dip—weather permitting. However, the current is very strong as the waterfall constantly pushes swimmers toward the rocky shore. The rocks here are extremely slippery, so proceed with caution to avoid injuries.

For those who prefer a gentler swim, there is a calmer section of the falls where younger kids and non-swimmers can safely enjoy the water.

Extra Adventure – Zip Lining! For the thrill-seekers, they even offer zip lining over the lush rainforest! I’ll admit—I was too much of a wimp to try it, but it looked absolutely wild. If you’re up for an adrenaline rush, this could be the perfect add-on to your visit.

Tips for Visiting Be prepared for the stairs. Make sure you’re fit enough to handle the steep hike back up. Wear water shoes. The rocks in and around the water are very slippery. Follow swimming safety rules. The currents can be strong, so stay in designated areas. Bring a waterproof bag. Your belongings will likely get wet if you swim. Consider zip lining. If you’re feeling adventurous, it’s an exciting way to experience the rainforest. Final Verdict La Fortuna Waterfall is an amazing place to visit, offering stunning views, a refreshing swim, and even high-flying adventure! Just be mindful of the steep stairs and strong currents, and whether you choose to swim or zip line, you’ll have an unforgettable experience in one of Costa Rica’s...

Magical and must see if you are touring in the La Fortuna area. The fall is about 75 m high and located at the base of the Chato Volcano. There is an entry fee of $20 for adults and kids over 8 years and younger children can go in free. Tickets can be made online or purchased at the gate. There is a decently sized parking lot right outside the entrance.

The view is spectacular from the top as well as the hike down. There are 500 steps down to reach the bottom of the waterfall and landings with seats and water fountains have been made should you need to catch a breath on your way up or down. The steps are wet from the rain and a bit muddy, so be careful of the slipperiness. Just like the rest of Costa Rican natural reserves, the area around the waterfall is also rich is majestic endogenous trees, creepers, epiphytes and such; enjoy the flora and foliage on either side on your way up or down the steps.

At the base of the waterfall several vistas have been made to watch the scenery and take photographs. The waterfall runs into a small river where visitors can swim or enjoy a cool dip or simply wade in. The water is cool and comfortable, so coming prepared with a swimsuit is always handy.

There is a food court selling ice cream, frozen yogurt, food and beer shops inside the waterfall area with a nice sitting area overlooking the nature and greenery. My kids enjoyed frozen yogurt to cool off after their climb up. There is also a smaller orchid trail where (as the name suggests), many orchid plants are homed. There is also a gifts and souvenier shop right next to the food court.

Overall, a lovely place to spend...
