So, we chose this hotel for a business trip based on the existing reviews and were not disappointed. ||The hotel is in a great location to allow for exploration of the area to be able to eat and drink whilst out and about. It has a great bar and restaurant on site so you dont even need to do that.||When you walk in, you really get a feel that you are somewhere special. The staff are smartly turned out, smiley, friendly and willing to help. They have put a lot of effort into this place, and it feels like a top end hotel. ||The breakfast selection was excellent, fresh and in abundance. There is something for everyone and lots of it. Very very nice and the staff are all over it. Clearing, cleaning, smiling etc. ||The room was perfect. I had the best 4 night's sleep and better than my actual bed at home. The room was clean and tidy. The shower was fantastic. A large rain head for above and the option of a handheld if you want to switch. I had a kettle, tea/coffee, water etc which for me is exactly what I want. ||The gym is small but has enough there to do a good workout. If, however you happen to go into there to do weight training, and there is someone lifting also, you will be very limited unless you want to politely switch between sets but that aside, it's a gym and provides running machines, dumbbells and a multi station etc. ||The cherry on top was the final morning we had to leave. We would not make the breakfast as we were leaving too early but the hotel prepared us a breakfast box each. That was seriously amazing. It contained a ton of stuff from ready-made roll, pre cut bread, butters, spreads, fruit, water, yoghurt, energy bar etc. I was so so impressed and that was a great touch. ||I honestly really really liked this place and the employees there need to be proud of what they are doing. ||Id highly...
Read moreWhen I arrived at night, I was completely exhausted after traveling for 2 days, so I did not have much of an opinion till later. When I got to my room I found a very comfortable bed, and the room was extremely clean. The bath was very modern and well appointed.
I woke the next day and had to be at work, but I took time to look out the window: wow! I had this view of a lovely old church. It was cloudy and the fog at the base of the building made it look like a dream.
On my way to the lobby I was struck by the beauty of the wide granite staircase, with beautiful mosaic stone on each landing.Coming back from work, it impressed me even more, with massive doors opening automatically.Combined with the staircase, I felt like I was staying in a modern and ancient castle.
The first sunny morning, I looked out my window at the church. The light hit it and made it even more beautiful. The moon was just past full, and a flock of ravens flew over the surface and scattered, like an echo of the recent lunar eclipse. It was a moment of beauty.
There is a charming park across the street that is also magical. Everything is a few minutes walk, and there is public transport at the corner. The staff is amazing and the restaurant has wonderful food. It is quiet, so if you are coming to drink and party, this will not be your vibe. But, if you are looking for a quiet and beautiful experience, with a clean and comfortable room this...
Read moreDisappointed doesn’t cover it. I’ve stayed before and it’s a good quality hotel. But what to make of a 4 star hotel that accepts your booking at its normal rate without telling you that all the facilities it has that make it a 4 star - little things like the bar, the restaurant, the gym, room service, etc - won’t be working for the duration of your stay? ||So as my biog says “you get what you pay for”…only here I did not get what I paid for. I got a 2 star hotel experience for a 4 star hotel price. But it’s the dishonesty of the management that sticks in my craw. They knew they were selling me a substandard experience from their norm yet didn’t have the grace to let me know or to adjust the price to reflect what they were actually selling me. ||My experience aside: the room was good quality and the three members of staff we met in this ghost town hotel were truly excellent and helpful. Can’t praise them more. When I said we were checking out after 1 night of a scheduled 5 night stay they facilitated this and made the process easy. ||But the honest thing to have done would have been to keep the hotel closed or offer a discount - there were only 13 rooms out of 140 occupied on the night. Maybe their contract with Accor won’t allow them to do either but this experience has been my worst in the many hotels across the world I’ve stayed in this year. And I’m a fan of Mercure...
