My wife and I followed the advice of our Rick Steves guidebook and spent a couple of nights in late August, ‘19 on the island of Aero, in the little town of Aeroskobing. We’re glad we did because was definitely one of the most charmingly picturesque places we visited during our three weeks in Scandinavia.|| ||Aeroskobing is where the ferry from Svendborg lands, and it is about as cute as it gets. The entire central core of the town consists of old shops and houses that have been lovingly preserved and restored. Walking through it is a delight. The nearby countryside is also a major attraction, with low hills covered with farms and dotted with other quaint towns. These are reachable by bicycle, car, or the free bus that circles back to Aeroskobing. We decided to take our rental car to the island, which was very easy and reasonable to do on the ferry (tip: we reserved and paid for our passage online so that we were assured of crossing from Svendborg at a particularly time).||||We chose the Hotel Aerohus partly because it offered free parking. If you leave your car in Svendborg or otherwise don’t have one, there are a number of other well-located options in town, though we found many are rather pricey or have shared bathroom facilities. The Aerohus is more or less right in the center of the old section, with several good restaurants nearby as well as a number of shops. The whole area is easily walkable, including to and from the ferry landing.||||The Aerohus is an old inn with a long connected addition to the rear that has event spaces and lodging rooms on either side of a hallway that eventually leads to the parking area. The old part houses a cozy reception area and bar, plus a larger restaurant off to one side. In front of the hotel is a pleasant outdoor seating area that provides an optional place for eating breakfast and dinner, weather permitting. The breakfast buffet was very ample, with a selection of fruit, yogurt, cereals, scrambled eggs, meats, etc. Wifi in the public areas and in our room was strong and fast. The staff was friendly and welcoming.||||Our room (#72) was in the newer section, one of the two rooms nearest the parking. The proximity to the parking was convenient, but there were quite a few passersby passing our windows on their way through the garden patio area on their way to the front of the building. The room was large but the decor was a bit utilitarian. The queen bed was comfortable, though we found the pillows low and hard. There were two night stands, a desk, two sitting chairs and a small table, and a built-in closet. A bureau along one wall contained a small refrigerator. The bathroom was large and attractive, with a skylight, a nice feature. The walk-in shower was large. Although the pedestal sink didn’t provide much storage space, there was a spacious ledge in the shower area that did.||||All in all we felt the Hotel Aerhus was a good choice for our two nights in...
Read moreFor some context about our stay. My husband and I travelled to Ærø to get marrried. We loved the breakfast and staff who were very friendly. There was even a residence cat who was too cute. There was an Argentinian singer who sang most nights and this was lovely and really gave a great atmosphere. It's also great that you can also rent bikes through the hotel.
I am slightly disappointed by some parts of our stay however and will list them below. I want to make it clear however this does not mean booking here is not worth it. Just important to bear in mind for your booking/ consideration.
The heat: Our biggest dissapointment that we had with the stay was the unbearable heat in the second floor rooms. We weren't in the rooms during the day of course, this heat was at night. As a solution we wanted to open the windows, however the numbers of spiders that lived on the outside of the windows became a running joke for us. We don't have a big problem with spiders but I for sure don't like them crawling on me at night (they literally did when we opened the windows.)
The room Bring your own pillows. The pillows we slept were honestly the worse pillows I've ever experienced. The one option has barely any "filling" to actually be called a pillow. You had to scrunch it up and stay still to keep it all together. The second options were stuffed with what sounded like plastic bags.
2a. Oh and the sound of the doors slamming and the locks clicking throughout the night with guests coming in at all hours was very disruptive for sleep. Seems like it could be a very simple fix though.
Booking confusion When we originally booked, we did not realise that we did not have our own bathroom. So we were disappointed to learn that we had to share. However, I will say that the bathrooms were always clean.
Stairs This is a small thing for us but we were surprised when we checked in, that we were on the second floor. This wasn't a problem for us but they are relatively steeps stairs and during our stay we helped multiple elderly people with their luggage. I feel this is a very important thing to mention anywhere people can make a booking. Or perhaps help them up the stairs...
Overall, I feel we could have had a much more comfortable stay in their other rooms or at the camping place close to Søby, they had some lovely huts on the beach, or some other locations around Marstal and Søby. The price we paid for the accommodation we got feels like a small injustice and the website's protrayal of the room and space feels oversold (at least for the second floor rooms). If we stayed elsewhere, yes we would be sacrificing the atmosphere and breakfast but I would have done that for some more of the comforts.
Given this I am still grateful to the hotel...
Read moreWe had the opportunity to celebrate our wedding reception in the restaurant of Hotel Ærøhus. The ambiance is so perfect. The dining room has plenty of natural light, with almost all walls being clear glass windows and doors. This fit perfectly to our idea of a clean and modern restaurant with a touch of “zen”.
We were able to use the entire room for our guests and we had a dedicated space for dancing. Ms. Dorrit was so helpful and accommodating in our requests for adding some touches and decoration to make our evening more personal. This was arranged without additional costs to setting up the place for us! :)
The staff were so friendly and took good care of our guests’ requests. They were always in good timing when serving the food and offering drinks.
We personally liked the fish dish and steak dish that our guests were raving about. The starter salad was sooo good, one of our guests asked if we can buy some salad dressing. Ms. Dorrit, instead, gave us a bottle of this heavenly dressing as a wedding present.
We enjoyed our wedding reception and believe that we made the right choice. Highly...
