We stayed at The North Star hotel for about 5 days, December 2014, and we left because of several problems.||||First, the place is too far away from town, and costs way too much for what you get.||||Second, the area is dismal, and lacks anything to do.||||Third, the WiFi is extremely sketchy and drops connection numerous times (about once every half hour). This means it needs to be reset, but the lady who works there will try and sell you a story about the WiFi being down all over town because she doesn't want to bother resetting the router/modem herself. We just took to powering it off and back on ourselves. Annoying.||||Fourth, (it gets worse), there were numerous mosquitoes, ants and we saw three different cockroaches in the room! The guy gave me some Raid to kill the first cockroach, but said he was too scared to deal with it himself, so I had to kill the roach and dispose of it myself. Disgusting.||||Fifth, the hotels rooms are all close together, and because of the comings and goings all night of other guests, it is hard to sleep.||||And lastly, we had an issue where we had paid the first night, but because we were so tired on arrival, we stupidly never got a receipt. Now this was our fault, but when we told the owner we had paid, and questioned the issue with her, her attitude stank. She is one of the many untrained people that you can find in the service industry who know nothing about customer service, never mind about basic politeness. She was dismissive and uncaring.||||We left because we found a better hotel in the center, which was cheaper. It was silly of the owner of The North Star to treat us with such a bad attitude, because she would have gotten 7 more days/nights out of us. But she did not seem to care, as they were fully booked, apparently, although they did get very confused over their own reservations when we spoke about it.||||The pros: the shower was nice and hot and worked OK, although it did get water all over the floor. There are some traveler services nearby you can use, such as a super quick laundry on the corner, and some cheap eateries nearby, but be careful of the dangerous and wide streets surrounding the hotel..||||One major issue with this hotel is that they lock the main gate at ALL times. This is the only exit, and the workers have the key upstairs. There is no way out without the key, and so if there is a fire, there could potentially be a disaster here. There are no back door escapes or windows to jump out of, so BEWARE! When I bought this up with the lady who worked there, she just shrugged her shoulders and did not give a damn. You've...
Read moreWe booked this night via a very quick view on internet, because we only needed one night to be early in the morning at the airport in Guayaquil, which is only 5 minutes away from the hostal. If I can anyone advise ... NEVER, NEVER, NEVER book this hotel. We booked a matrimonial room for 36 US dollars, but after only 10 minutes it became clear that the room was full of grasshoppers and cockroaches. They showed up in every corner of the room, really horrible. After a long discussion in Spanish with the receptionist we could change the room to another one with a shared bathroom for the price of 25 US dollars. Though in the shared bathroom also grasshoppers and cockroaches showed up. Tired of discussions and eager for the small amount of hours to sleep, we paid the 25 US dollars, but please do never book this hotel. It'll be your worst...
Read moreDo Not Stay here on your first night in Ecuador- rooms are adequate but the bathrooms are not in your room so you must go out into the hallways to get there- the location is to say the least undesirable for someone not familiar with Guayaquil. Very limited English if any if you do not speak Spanish. We stayed only one night and this because our flight came in very late (delayed as usual ) No hot water and unable to get any assistance in getting it. There is no place close to get food, snacks or bottled water- no coffee any where close. Would not recommend this Hostal to English...
