Although the place is lovely, I really did not like the fact that they did not give us a receipt after our payment (even after our request). In Ecuador, this is not a minor detail. In fact, not giving a receipt is illegal. The tax system in Ecuador is set up so that any transaction has to generate a receipt. The person that paid for the good or the service can then use the receipt to ameliorate the weight on his/her taxes (I particularly do not benefit, since I live in the USA). At the same time, the system ensures to keep a record of the transaction to charge taxes on the business. This system was set up to avoid tax evasion, and has been highly successful, tripling the revenue to the state that allowed government to bring development to the very needed rural areas of Ecuador in the last years. I do not like that the owners of this business (from the capital, Quito) are avoiding paying taxes that would benefit their own poor neighbors in Puerto Lopez. You have a beautiful hostel in the middle of so much poverty, the business is successful mainly due to the richness of the landscape and the beautiful nature, you are making money out of it... give a little back! I am not asking for charity, it is your LEGAL...
Read moreStayed for a week, loved every minute. Came last year as well, both trips with a group of teens. Breakfasts are fantastic, with freshly made juices, eggs and breads made by Gladys who not only takes great care of her guests, but also her dogs, cats, and tortoises. The courtyard is very inviting for an evening socializing, complete with fishnet hammocks. The beach is a 5 minute walk, and there are many locals who sell the best foods along the street. This is NOT for anyone looking for a fancy hotel, but it is clean, comfortable, and has private rooms/bathrooms. You will hear noise at night from roosters, dogs, and loud music, all part of the Puerto Lopez experience. Be patient with the water pressure, and bring your own towel(theirs are small). I feel like we are part of a big extended family here!|While here, make sure you take a boat ride with "Adventuras La Plata". Excellent whale watch/snorkeling adventure, complete with a...
Read moreWe absolutely loved our stay here! A beautiful garden with hammocks and 35 pet turtles, including George the giant land turtle!! We met Galo when enquiring about boat trips and he told us about this place, which is ran by his lovely mum, Gladys. They were both so helpful and went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. Sitting in the garden eating Guaba Machete and learning about the turtles was definitely a highlight for me. And if you want to practice your Spanish, Gladys is so patient and kind and lovely to talk to. |Thank you very much for welcoming us so warmly into...
