Read moreMy husband and I really loved staying at Aragheed Nubian Guesthouse. From the moment we arrived, Captain Bassam was an incredible host and invited us to be a part of his culture. Originally we were going to stay just two nights but we ended up extending to four.
We learned so much about Nubia that we didn’t know before and got to experience the incredible hospitality of his family/neighbors by staying in the Nubian village on the west bank of the Nile. For us, there was nothing better than the peace and quiet of the village—especially compared to the noise and hustle of the East Bank!
We booked a few activities and tours with Bassam. The first was camel riding, a visit to the Noble Tombs, and sand boarding for $30 USD per person. We had a blast and it was great because it was just us, not lots of other tourists. It was a half day at sunset, which was a beautiful time to spend out in the desert.
We also booked a tour of Abu Simbel through him, which was $40 USD per person. This involves going to the bus convoy early (we left around 3:30 am), arriving at Abu Simbel by 9, and then and spending 1.5 hours there before heading the three hours back home. Personally I wish we had gotten to spend more time there (maybe stay overnight) but of course this is just the tour company, a reflection upon Bassam. He gave us a boxed breakfast that morning and made sure we were taken care of, even that early.
The final thing we booked through Bassam was a 1-day/1-night felucca trip down the Nile toward Luxor. The felucca cost $30 per person for 4 people, all meals included. It was a very relaxing experience, taking it easy as we sailed with a three-person crew. Staying on the boat on the bank of the Nile felt a little like camping; the crew made a campfire and BBQ chicken for dinner. In the morning, we shared a private taxi to Luxor together. Initially I thought we could get all the way to Luxor from Aswan but nope, the feluccas just don’t go that fast with their sails! I enjoyed it.
Breakfast was delicious and included with your our stay. We always had more than enough food. He also kept orange juice, tea, water, fresh dates, and Turkish coffee available for us at any time. We enjoyed delicious jebena coffee with him one night and a musical performance by his uncle another night, both of which were truly special.
Thank you Bassam! We wish you...
Read moreAmazing cultural experience, the place was extremely clean and the people very hospitable
Pros · This place is one of the highlights of my 3 week trip to Egypt and a unique cultural experience to remember because of the traditional Nubian coffee we had in the tent the night we arrived. Just the owner of the hotel and his friends singing and playing live music on traditional instruments mixed with the sound of the campfire and the beans being roasted on top of it. The process is long, and the resulting cups of coffee are small but the taste is worth the wait and the process itself using dried grass to filter the coffee at the end is so interesting to watch. No staged organized trip can ever compare to this. About the hotel and the rooms: The place is exceptionally clean. Breakfast was a lot and truly amazing. Everything is colored in a traditional Nubian Style and looks so pretty and colorful. The atmosphere is really laid back, especially on the roof terrace with a view over the Nile. Perfect for relaxation! About the location: It is right next to the Tombs of Nobles, the surroundings are beautiful and the area is really quiet at night so if you are a light sleeper you will be delighted. About the people: Everyone was extremely kind and friendly. Thank you for the hospitality and for letting us join you and your friend in the tent for some Nubian coffee, music and freshly roasted dates.
Cons · The hotel is on the other side of the river so you need to somehow cross it in order to get there. There is a cheap ferry that will take you across for only 5 or 10 egp but it is a bit difficult to find it and there are plenty of boat owners that will claim they are the ferry or that there is no ferry and ask 200 egp or more to take you across. Not knowing what are the opening hours for the ferry we felt especially nervous if it will be still working the later it got. Luckily, on the way back the owner of the hotel had a friend of his bring us back to the other side with his...
