The staff are quite hospitable, friendly and speak English surprisingly well. As a matter of fact, most Finns I've met who do speak English, even the senior citizens, speak English fairly well. The hotel is very clean for its age. On the downside, the hotel itself is quite old - like a Tarantino version of a socialist hotel from the '60s. There's only one elevator and the rooms are very, very basic. However, I gotta say once more that they're very clean, although the radiator heaters tend to be malfunctioning, particularly the ones in the bathroom. Breakfast might not be exactly what You'd expect, unless you're not from Finland - scrambled eggs are not salted at all, all of the boiled eggs are surprisingly white, and the food selection in general is quite basic. Window view from the room leaves a lot to be desired and since the reception desk is closed after 20h, you are left with no other options but to call the emergency service in case You may need anything. I forgot my key in the room and had to pay 40 EUR for the emergency service intervention. To be honest, the people were very friendly, apologetic and caring, but there was no warning of any kind in terms of any fees You'd have to pay in case You may forget Your key in Your room, let...
Read moreWe spent four nights at the Kauppahotelli and on the whole were very satisfied with our experience. It is somewhat cheaper than many other hotels in Lahti but still quite expensive by non-Finnish standards. ||The location was fine - just 20 minutes' walk from the railway station. As we were arriving after 5.30pm we were given a code with which to enter the hotel and our keys were waiting for us at the reception desk. The entrance did not look particularly inviting but the inside it was fine.|| Our room on the fifth floor was of a decent size. There was a rack with a few coathangers; a wardrobe or some drawers would have been useful. The shower looked rather old but in fact worked very well. The beds were comfortable.||Breakfast was an excellent buffet, better than many we have had in swankier hotels. The staff were pleasant and spoke very good English.||We booked direct with the hotel (not via booking.com) and so did not have to pay until we checked out. A happy reminder of how...
Read morePrice correct and good allocation in the city center. Varied breakfast but I might have appreciated a little more variety in sweets (bakery, cereals,...). The negative part, which is a shame, is that there is no reception service in the afternoons. We were traveling in a group and two colleagues accidentally forgot the key inside the room, so they were fined 150 euros to come and open it, an issue that would not have happened if it had been anyone on the reception. A completely excessive amount considering that they had not broken anything, and that it was an incident that can happen to anyone. Totally unacceptable, in my opinion. A real pity because for the rest everything...
