Given its 2-star rating and many poor/average reviews, we really weren’t expecting good things. However, we were pleasantly surprised! ||||We chose the hotel purely due to its location at the foot of the slopes, the reasonable price and Les Sybelles’ large skiable domain. We booked half board, and the food was actually really good! Buffet style continental breakfast, with unlimited cheeses, ham, French bread, yoghurts, fruit, cereal, pastries, hard boiled eggs, juices & tea/coffee/hot chocolate. We even made some baguettes for our lunch! Served from 8am, which meant we could easily be on the slopes for when the lifts opened at 9am. ||||Evening meal: you needed to make your main course choice in the morning, which was basically meat or veggie. Tasty and plenty big enough portions. There was also a different homemade soup every night with bread and then a small pudding. We even had Raclette there one night. Dinner was served between 7-7:30pm, and the servers were all very polite and helpful.||||All rooms had a balcony and ours (for 2) was quite spacious. Everywhere was really clean and the beds comfortable. Decor and furniture typically Alpine and dated. The main downside was the soundproofing though, which is non-existent! However, having read other reviews about this, we’d come prepared with earplugs! We also brought a travel kettle, hairdryer and toiletries, as we knew these weren’t provided either. ||||On the lower ground floor, there are individual ski lockers with padlocks, and a door from there leading directly outside. ||||The hotel is NOT ski-out as described - even in the height of the season - as the slopes are uphill from the hotel! However, it was an easy ~50-metre walk to the slopes where you could strap on your skis and ski down to a choice of lifts. ||||At the end of the day, you can ski practically all the way back to the locker room door, which was great.||||As for the ski domain, it was our first time to Les Sybelles. We usually go to the 3 Valleys or Paradiski, but the prices there are getting silly and the slopes are busy. So we were pleasantly surprised by Les Sybelles: very quiet slopes, well-linked ski area with a good choice of runs, and significantly cheaper lift passes. (This is a Sunweb hotel and all their holidays include a full area lift pass.)||||So, all in all, we had a really good week here. Just be realistic: don’t expect luxury and come prepared with a...
Read moreI was in the part of our ski group that was accommodated in this hotel (rather than a chalet). In other words, this was our overflow accommodation, but we were glad to be housed there as the rooms were much bigger than in the chalets where the other skiers in our group were. Also, our room had its own internal corridor, off which there were doors leading to the bedroom, bathroom and separate WC. - The beds had enough space between them for a single nightstand and you had to move one of the beds to access the balcony, but the room was quite long, which meant there was adequate floor space. In the corridor, there was a wardrobe, but some of the shelving was high up and there weren't enough hangers for two people to use. As a result, I just left my clothes in my bag. In the usual French style, there was no hand-wash facility in the separate WC (unless you took the top of the cistern and used that). The Japanese have a design of cistern that incorporates a washbasin. French hotels might want to consider retro-fitting something of that design to address what could be a hygiene issue. One other small-ish gripe was that there was no clothes line over the bath and the radiators were of a type that must not be covered. As such, washing and drying ski socks etc could prove difficult (I didn't attempt it). - We stayed on a breakfast-only basis, so cannot comment on the dinners. The breakfasts were of the continental variety and perfectly adequate, just bring your own teabags as the selection on offer was very limited! - The hotel also offered a very pleasant bar and terrace area. - At the time we stayed - March 2022 - the hotel was being operated as part of SunWeb, I believe, and the staff and many of the guests were Dutch. The lingua franca was English. -Access to the slopes was via a short, uphill walk and the hotel was almost ski-in. We had to walk the last 50 metres due to lack of snow cover, but earlier in the season I am sure you could have skied all the way to the ski-locker room. - In short, despite the few negative points, I would be happy to stay there again, especially as part of a...
Read moreMake no mistake this is a budget hotel, but it punches well above its weight. We had a fantastic time here and the skiing was an extensive intermediate paradise. Despite a few antiquated (slow) lifts and a few T bars to get connections the never queued and we had most of the pistes to ourselves although I think high season may be different. The hotel is well positioned (ski home and just 50m to the slopes), clean and it has lots of facilities for a budget hotel. As always the staff are crucial to the enjoyment and they were all excellent, friendly and helpful. They all seem very happy in their work too. Our (single) beds were very comfortable, the pillows were great, the linen clean. The bathrooms were out dated but they had all the basic needs and were a reasonable size too. Despite only having single lift it was quickly to use. In the basement the boot room was basic (unheated lockers) but well located and had lots of seats for boot changing. The sauna was small but well kept (the steam room and showers weren't working during our stay - one little gripe). The reception was open at key times and the staff were fantastic. The dining room was comfortable and the food on our half board deal simple with adequate portions for the money however the single coffee machine had trouble keeping up with demand at breakfast so I'd expect them to order a second one soon! The icing on the cake was the bar, which was both comfortable to relax in, with big chairs and sofas but also space to sit or stand at the bar too. Their local IPA was particularly good - better than Neck Oil! On the Monday night they hosted a DJ for Apres Ski and the terrace got packed until around 7.00 pm which was great fun. The other nights were relaxed and fairly quiet, so we didn't both going out although the bar in the hotel shuts at 9.30/10.00 so if you want anything after that it's a 150m walk down to town but there not a lot going on there either. So I think it's a great place for a family or families with teenagers or small groups of friends but not a hotel or town for very young families nor for...
