Just back from two weeks here. First visit to Pelion but frequent visitors to Greece. Really cannot speak too highly of the whole Maistros experience. ||||Booking with Dimitris was friendly, prompt & efficient. The apartment (no 1) was spacious, well equipped and had stunning views up the coast. Vera, the local manager was very solicitous about our welfare and, as in previous reviews, a complimentary tray with local liqueurs appeared each week. Also a lovely local gift when we left.||||A car is an obvious necessity - and don't get a cheap underpowered one as we did or you'll rarely be out of first or second gear! You soon get used to hurling the car into the hairpin bends praying there's not a macho local cutting the corner coming the other way!||||Damouchari is picture postcard pretty, very friendly and you're soon on 'kalimera' terms with the local business owners as you stroll around. We ate in all four tavernas, only one of which was an absolute one-off with dire food & service & loud music. 'To Kastro', though lacking sea views, is very friendly & their Rabbit in Red Sauce is to die for. Apostolis' place has a prime position & very good food. He is a definite character though his rather haughty partner/wife? seemed to have definite views on who she would deign to acknowledge, even after three visits... There is also an excellent village taverna on the way up to Mouresi - never got the name as the sign is so faded!||||Also, must mention Victoria's - a shop with rooms above and a delightful terrace overlooking the harbour serving drinks and meals. Tomas & his mother were so friendly & helpful. Ideal spot for breakfast, that evening drink or late Metaxa & baklava.||||The Pelion was a joy. So green & lush with clouds of scent from the wild clematis in flower and birdsong everywhere. We mostly used Plaka beach, beyond Agios Iannos - just park at the far end near the boat harbour and walk round. Milopotamos is also a real delight. Try the cafe up the stairs at the far end of the beach. Damouchari beach is nearly all dazzling large white stones with just a small patch of sand when we were there. Unfortunately, we watched from the taverna behind as all the local dogs had there evening stroll there - and used the sand - explained why we had to wash the towels out after our one & only sunbathe...
Read moreMaistros Sudios, in Damouchari, Pelion, is a wonderful place. What makes it so is a combination of the studios themselves, the place, and the people who own and run it - Dimitris and Vera. I've already stayed there three times, two of them for a long period of time (from 3 weeks to over a month; a writing holiday), and in fact most of the people who stay there are people who come back to Maistros again and again over the years and stay for not just a few days. The position of the studios is unique - in fact I began staying there because on coming up on foot from the little Damouchari cove that Maistros is directly above, I saw the place and said to myself, I would so like to stay here. And so I contacted Dimitris, moved there, and stayed there for ten days with my son, and we loved it. All the studios have a unique and especially beautiful view of the sea and mountains, and each one has its own special atmosphere. They combine beauty and comfort (great beds!), and you can feel that every little detail had been really thought out for the guests' well-being. In fact, I have never seen anyone so attentive to their guests' needs, or even possible needs, as Dimitris and Vera! It is indeed a rare and unique place, one that you develop a real feeling for, and I do hope to return soon. Thank you so much, Dimitris and Vera, for making our stays everything one...
Read moreI visited the place already five times. Incredible view along the coast. The oak forest reaches here down to the sea. No traffic, no noise. Appartment house integrated in the natural surroundings. Fine rooms with tasteful furniture and big balconies. All with air condition, but you need it seldom since the green forests and the seawind guarantee a mild climate. Very service-minded owners. At this moment 4 appartments, plans to add 4 more in a decent way without destroying the charme of the place.||In 100m distance downhill a natural seawater swimming pool formed by a wave-protected little bay. A natural beach at 400 m, four excellent taverns and two little shops in the car free village of Damouchari at 300 m distance. Other sand beaches at 15 or 25 minutes walking distance. Next bigger village Agios Ioannis an 25 minutes. Prices are modest since they are orientated on internal greek tourism.||Direct flight of Airberlin to Volos (1 1/2 hours distance) every Monday and Thursday. Best for outdoor activities. Hiking in the mountains (45 minutes by car) between 1100 and 1400 meters in extense beech forests even in July and August. Generally mild climate because of very green...
