Gecko Hotel y Restaurante, El Paredón — Hotel in Escuintla

We’re deeply dissatisfied with our stay at Gecko Hotel. We booked it based on good reviews and its location just outside the main area, hoping for peace and comfort. Instead, we got noise, chaos, and a total lack of professionalism.

The hotel is clean and the food is good, but the atmosphere is more like a private family hangout than a hotel. Staff are loud, inattentive, and constantly playing music or shouting among themselves. There were even what seemed like karaoke sessions during the day in one of the hotel rooms for the staff. It’s hard to know who’s actually working—many just hang out at the reception, at tables, or even in hotel rooms. A young child, presumably a family member, is constantly running around and screaming. The owner walks around with AirPods in, adding to the general sense that guests are not the priority.

On our final night, a thunderstorm caused a full power outage. There was no light, no water, no fan, no AC, no WiFi—and no communication from staff. The heat was unbearable, and the rooms have no windows, just a sliding door we didn’t feel safe leaving open. We had no idea how to use the toilet or navigate in the dark. The next morning, around 8am, staff finally informed us they had a generator, which they switched on only for about 10 minutes so we could shower. Power was never restored before we checked out.

For nearly $100 per night, this was a complete disappointment. Until Gecko Hotel is run with real hospitality and respect for guests, I would strongly advise...

This place is amazing! Nestled on the edge of El Paredon, you gain privacy and essentially your own beach area. It is a short walk down the beach to more social areas and restaurants. The food there is 10/10 and the rooms are sooo nice with air conditioning and a refreshing shower. While we were there, we swam a lot at the perfect pool and had many very delicious smoothies, alcohol cocktails, and cervesas. We got to meet the owners and they are extremely friendly and truly happy to have you as a guest. I would stay here...

Magical stay in El Paredón! Gecko is situated on the quiet, peaceful side of town, enough to get away from the busy Hostel scene, but just a 5min walk from all bars & main restaurants. Excellent restaurant, pool service, room Comfort with A/C and private bathroom. Magic spot for remote workers / solo travelers / couples who’re adventuring in Guatemala🇬🇹
