I don't actually know what the EU hotel star system is based on. This place would barely qualify as a 1-star motel in the United States.
The room I was in had similar cellar spiders as the Reception desk room and the ground floor lobby, and the room furniture had a silverfish infestation. The front desk does have a shop vacuum available to guests so that they can clean their room, which is appreciated. What is not appreciated is the fact that there is housekeeping staff, who don't appear to clean anything other than the bedsheets.
Even after vacuuming 18 spiders during three separate sessions, they seem to keep coming back. The included photo of one on the ceiling is actually misleading. I was unable to reach close enough with the size comparison dollar bill to do it justice. The spider is actually as wide as the height of Lincoln, the height of the bill. A little more, actually. So likely 2.7 - 3.1 inches in diameter.
About 10 of the vacuumed spiders were within 20% of this size, indicating that the rooms are filled with enough dust mites, silverfish, and other insects to support a population of at least a dozen cellar spiders at least 5cm in diameter.
The heavy infestation of creatures around the common areas and rooms isn't lethal by any means, but it is quite disturbing to anyone who is afraid of large spiders. Breakfast is offered, which is nice for anyone who enjoys eggs with a cup brimming with spiders.
There's air conditioning, which is kind of a bonus for EU hotels. The particular unit in my room appeared to have a damaged compressor at first, but turned out to just have a damaged or miscalibrated thermostat. Turning the unit to 20 degrees allowed the compressor to start cooling the room towards 26 degrees.
In any case, the spider that hangs around the front door of the Reception desk appears to be the largest one I've seen in the hotel. I think I'll name her Pókember, after the Hungarian name for the...
Read moreJust made the mistake of booking here again after a reasonable stay in July. It is in a quiet location, the terrace is nice, the food is ok and the rooms also ok. On this occasion I discovered the safe wasn't working. I suspected the batteries were flat as there were no lights. I informed a member of staff who happened to be on the floor my room was on and he gesticulated at a spare key on the room key ring. I had no idea what he meant, but he eventually came in and locked the safe with this key. There had been no indication what the key was for and his arrogant attitude was rather annoying, especially as he had been the beneficiary of some large tips last time I stayed. ||I went out and on my return was unable to unlock the safe. I spent lots of time trying, giving up then trying again about 4 times before finally going to reception, where mr arrogant was behind the counter. ||When I pointed at the key and shook my head he said to see his boss tomorrow. I said I needed it open now. He took the key and strode to the room. I watched him as he twiddled the key with one hand and the lock with other. It did open, not straight away, but after about 10 seconds. There is clearly a technique which I had failed to master. He gesticulated not to use it again and stormed off. ||So there we have it. Having the temerity not to speak the local language in a hotel that advertises in English, and expecting the safe to be fumctioning warrants rudeness and arrogance. ||I certainly won't be...
Read moreAn unusual hotel. The public areas are filled with objet d'art. The rooms vary, but are very clean. The breakfast offers a wide choice. The touch-screen coffee machine is interesting. The location, next to a tributary stream of the Danube is excellent. It is very well located for visiting the spa and for the old town centre. The staff are professional and friendly, and most of them speak English. In the summer, you can take breakfast outside. Sadly, the restaurant is not open nowadays. The grounds are lovely. It was good value for money. I stayed twice. My wife and I really would have stayed again (probably several times) if they would accommodate my elderly house-trained maine coon cat, but they refused to accept him even when I offered a cash deposit against any possible damage (the cat stayed in many hotels, and never did any damage). They accept dogs without deposits, so their position is irrational, unreasonable and bad business. We will now not stay there again, even if we travel without our cat, so they lost...
