Booked for a trip to see the Cricket at Dharamshala. Used booking.com expecting ease of booking and payment, but were surprised when close to our stay the hotel advised they needed a INR 10,000 deposit. Added to this they advised they do not have facilities for taking card payments. Rather than seeking somewhere else at short notice, decided to proceed with a bank transfer, which cost us £25 to arrange with my bank. Later during our stay, we had to find the remainder in cash. Not too easy with India’s less than reliable ATM service!||Firstly the positives of our stay:||Location is good (though be aware of steep hill to the main drag)||Rooms are spacious ||WiFi was reliable ||My shower was efficient ||Food was ok (though better if you ventured out)||Negatives:||Room and hotel very tired and in need of updating ||Towels and linen stained and not very clean. I asked them to replace my towels and duvet cover on arrival, which they did but it was still bad. Throughout the stay I had to use one of my T-shirts as a pillowcase!||Very noisy with building work next door (not warned about this), additional to this there was a barking dog the other side waking me up in the middle of the night regularly. Told staff about this, but they didn’t seem bothered.||Dangerous access to hotel as road was dug up, had to negotiate this hazard throughout the stay.||Furniture in room old. Only two coat hangers in wardrobe. ||Rooms not serviced, had to request new towels and toilet rolls. ||No room cleaning done during my stay (stayed 9 nights!)||An observation from our stay and quite indicative of the attitude of management is refusing a INR 500 note in payment in room service due to a small blemish on the note (this note came from an ATM by the way). I replaced accordingly, but if they paid as much detailed attention to their rooms/cleanliness etc, this hotel will be much better. You get the feeling they were very money driven to the detriment of their guests comfort. ||Shout out to a member of staff called Dimpletakur who was particularly friendly and helpful. The only stand out member of staff.||By UK standards, the price per night was quite cheap, and there is an argument you get what you pay for. But cleanliness, whatever the price, is the least to expect.||In summary, I would suggest trying somewhere else, especially for overseas guests. There’s plenty around Mcleodganj to...
Read moreI recently had the unfortunate experience of staying at Hotel Varuni in McLeodganj, and I must say it was one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. Let me start from the beginning.
When I called the hotel to inquire about the room rates, the owner quoted me a price of ₹2000 for a night's stay. I negotiated and asked if they could offer it for ₹1500, to which the owner agreed. He said we could work something out when I arrived.
Upon reaching the hotel, I was greeted by the manager since the owner was conveniently absent. The manager showed me the room and spoke to the owner over the phone regarding the price. After the conversation, the manager told me that I had to make the payment immediately for two days' stay. Although this was not what we had agreed upon earlier, I reluctantly paid ₹3000.
To my surprise, the next morning, the owner appeared and asked me if I planned to stay for another day. I responded affirmatively, explaining that I had already paid ₹3000 for the room. However, he suddenly claimed that the room I had chosen was actually priced at ₹3000, even though he never mentioned any price categories or informed me about the cost before. I felt deceived and cheated by this sudden change in price.
Another disappointment was the hotel's internet connection. Prior to booking, the owner had specifically mentioned that they had excellent internet, which was important for me as I needed to work during my stay. But to my dismay, the internet turned out to be unreliable and frustratingly slow. It was far from the "great internet" that was promised.
Moreover, the room itself was very average. The amenities were lacking, and the overall cleanliness and maintenance left much to be desired. It was clear that the room did not justify the inflated price of ₹3000.
Frustrated by this experience, I decided to look for an alternative for the following day. I managed to find another hotel for ₹2000, and to my relief, the room was much better in terms of quality and comfort.
In conclusion, my stay at Hotel Varuni was highly disappointing. The owner's dishonesty about the room price, the subpar internet connection, and the mediocre room quality all contributed to my dissatisfaction. I would strongly advise against staying at this hotel if you value honesty, good service, and value...
Read moreI would like to tell, how these people scam you into paying more. I booked 4 Rooms for 1 night for 1st July under 4 names (of my friends). We reached at the time of checkin. There the manager told us that he can see that we booked only 3 rooms, not the fourth one. I showed him the mail and confirmation as well from where i booked the hotel. But the manager conveniently said that they don't have the booking for the fourth room. I told them to check there mail once to see the booking, firstly they denied then after we forced the manager switched him gmail account and searched the booking id there, which was not found. Later he got confused about the name whose room was missing and he accidentally opened that mail on the previous gmail account. We saw that and we confronted about it. The he lied again saying that Shekhar Lamba, mailed the booking company to cancel the room one night before as they gave the room to someone else. we booked the hotel 10 days ago, and they mailed the company to cancel the room only 1 night ago. they didn't even bothered to call us and tell, and on the top the manager was lying that he didn't got the mail for the booking. Then we confronted that earlier you said that there was no booking mail now you are saying that the mail was there but the room was given to someone else and we have mailed the company to cancel our fourth room. Then we called Shekhar to talk about this, he talked rudely and said that we have to pay 2500Rs more if we want a room. The entire staff behaviour was really bad. I recommend to avoid this hotel at any cost, this is one of the worst hotel, as they won't provide you any booking surety and will give your room to someone else even after...
