Don’t let the weathered shacks, narrow uneven pathways, and grimy facades fool you as you approach the Paku Mas Hotel. Beneath the unassuming exterior lies a cozy, resort-style sanctuary that seamlessly blends rustic charm with modern comfort.
The hotel exudes a warm vibe, thanks to its fusion of concrete structures and inviting wooden accents that harmonize beautifully with the lush surroundings. Checking in is a breeze at the standalone reception, where the ever-smiling staff make you feel right at home.
The rooms are housed in charming three-story buildings with nostalgic wooden décor that transports you to a simpler time, yet without compromising on comfort or style. Each room has its own unique touch, but the highlight for me was the common corridor. A quaint little balcony table and chair just outside your door, overlooking either a serene swimming pool or a well landscaped parking area. It’s perfect for morning coffee or an evening wind-down.
The twin-bedded room I stayed in was huge—it could comfortably fit two more twin beds. The rustic wooden furniture gave it an ‘80s vibe, a charming throwback that felt both homey and unique. That said, some upgrades to the bathroom and furniture to further elevate the experience.
If you think the accommodation is the highlight, wait until you try the food. The poolside restaurant serves a balanced selection of Western and local dishes, all cooked fresh to order. I indulged in room service during my stay, and let me tell you—it was fast, hot, and oh-so-satisfying.
The Alfredo Katsu Spaghetti. This dish is a fusion of Japanese and Italian flavors, perfectly al dente spaghetti, luxuriously coated in creamy Alfredo sauce with a subtle umami kick from a secret blend of miso and Parmesan. Crowning this delightful dish is a golden-brown, panko-crusted chicken katsu that’s fried to perfection—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Another standout is the Grilled Chicken Salad, a refreshing and wholesome option. Tender slices of juicy chicken breast rest atop a medley of crisp greens—romaine, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and bell peppers. It’s the perfect balance of freshness and flavor.
Would I come back to Paku Mas Hotel? Absolutely, for both the cozy accommodation and the standout food. That said, the hotel would benefit from a few upgrades to its dated infrastructure, especially the bathrooms and furniture. I’d rate the overall experience a solid 4 out of 5.
The food, though? That’s a glowing 5 out of 5—not just for the flavors and presentation but also for the incredible value for money.

Read moreThe beauty of Paku Mas Hotel in Yogyakarta lies in so many things… and not just with the cost. ||||The entire place does not look like a cold unfeeling hotel. It looks and feels just like your grandmother’s country home, or a small villa of sorts. Very warm, very home-y, very accommodating. It doesn’t give off that cold marble + glass + chrome vibe that most city hotels have. Am glad I booked at Paku Mas. Plants, gardens, a small pool, Indonesian treated wood and textile everywhere. The smell of pandan and Asian herbs and spices abound.|||| The breakfast buffet is simple and homey. They almost stayed away 100% from the “western” concept of breakfast buffets— but they kept a little bit some of it, like a small salad station and a small bread station. Paku Mas Hotel kept their love for Yogyakarta and its culture by serving mostly Indonesian and Yogyakarta specialties. The rice cakes were awesome! Perfect to bite into with their warm Jamu. Lunch and dinner were served a la carte, which is exactly what you’d get for room service. The portions are perfectly generous, considering the prices and the quality. ||||The Staff are the warmest you’d see in Indonesia or Yogyakarta. They are like long-lost friends or relatives. They will take care of your every need. They would even suggest to have your beverage or food in your room, or just outside your room, if they feel you’d need a little privacy. ||||The rooms were not very hotel-y, which is perfect. They felt like, and looked like, residential guest rooms, for when you’re visiting your favourite grandmother or aunt. Warm bricks, no frosty aircons, no electronic wizardries… just like a perfect relaxing home.||||All the best to Paku Mas Hotel and your Staff,...
