Rinjani Base Camp - Rinjani Trek Centre — Hotel in Lombok

The accommodation provided at Rinjani Base Camp was basic to say the least. The room had a bed with no top sheet, just a dirty fleece blanket and no other furniture in the room. The "bathroom" just had a toilet and a cold water tap with hose to shower with which was freezing (there was no basin). The communication was poor - we were expecting a briefing the night before so we knew the timings, what to pack etc for the next day but this never happened. I had to text the owner to find out what time and where we needed to be the next day. We were taken from Senaru to Sembalun in the back of a pick up truck where we started out ascent. The hike was hard but we made it to the crater rim in good time. The food the porters cooked was good but basic and something had given me a dodgy tummy and I lay awake in the tent with a nasty headache thinking I had altitude sickness and wouldn't be able to do the climb to the summit. It turns out our guide also wasn't well and as a result he was unable to accompany us to the summit which would have been helpful when navigating the way up in the dark. Luckily we managed to make it just in time for the sunrise but it was a much harder climb that we all had anticipated. The final climb up the scree was incredibly slow progress. I noticed several other trekking companies had camping chairs which would have been very welcome rather than a child's play mat to sit on. We booked a 3 days 2 nights tour to Rinjani and started after we registered at Rinjani Park office. Our guides Anton and Saba were very friendly, helpful and patient. They can speak good English and can tell you a lot about the volcano itself and the local life at Lombok. The porters (we were a group of 7 and had 6 porters) did a very good job: they served us with water, three meals (spaghetti bolo, rice, curry soup..) through the day with tea, coffee, fresh fruits and vegetables, they build up and packed our tents with sleeping bags and pillows and we were able to ask them every single question of how long we walk or when our next break will be. We asked for 4 days/ 3 nights tour and explicitly asked if they have equipment such as warm jackets, gloves, hiking poles. They say yes to everything and then it turns into a 3 days/ 2 nights tour because of "missunderstandings". The price also changed. In our group only two had poles and garten gloves and really thin jacket. The rest had nothing. Not even a plastic covering against rain. Organisation was really bad. We never knew where we're going or what's planned. Sleeping bags were thin, matrasses as well. The guide was nice but never gave any info. One group went down after one night without a guide.
