Firstly location - super quick train from Milan but it's a small station at Como and we struggled to get a taxi with lots of tourists arriving at once so maybe best to ask hotel to arrange for you.
Had asked for early check in 1pm but room was not ready and a bit vague about how long it would be and little advice given on what we could do despite Gold status with chain and having booked a club room. Did provide a card for access to lounge when directly requested but no initial offer. It was a bad sign of a general lack of service.
Checked in when we returned and room itself was fine with a small juliette style balcony, view of the pool and we could also see the lake a little which was nice. None of the normal welcoming touches though and no reference to our Silver Wedding celebrations.
Bed as always comfortable. TV limited English channels and minibar no price list for the whole 7 day stay.
Bathroom OK but toilet roll holder awkward and shower was over bath which I don't really like.
Aircon was generally poor - but we are Scottish and like it cool. It was definitely altered during the night as you could get the room fairly chilly around 5pm but overnight no hope.
Cleaning and the green scheme a bit variable - for hygiene they should always as a minimum empty bins - they don't and normally SPG guests receive water - it was not replenished if green choice made.
The pool was nice but a major issue with areas regularly being closed off for events making it difficult for hotel guests. These events also caused a lot of blockages at reception and on the day we checked out we had to walk to the side of the hotel with all our luggage to get our taxi as they had closed the road for the event - no offer of assistance was provided.
The club lounge was the real let down. Very minimal service with really only 1 member of staff who was fairly new and also looked after room service so regularly vanished. On days she was off struggled to get anyone. Breakfast stated you could order omelette, pancakes, etc but not if no staff to be found and everything from water, to juice, to bread for toasting seemed to constantly run out and struggle to be replenished. Also very weird habit of serving last night's hot veg for breakfast - green beans, broccoli, you name it.
Daytime you could pop in for a snack - fruit, little sandwiches (always the same cheese and ham), etc but again as nothing topped up a particular juice or water could be a struggle.
Happy hour was not very happy! Listed as a selection of hot options it would be one meat or fish item with a single side veg e.g. plain broccoli or green beans, peas, etc with you guessed it the same cheeses and ham sandwiches. There was also various hams which were nice but hit or miss if any bread.
Drinks were wine, spritz or beer - aperol is not to my taste, fizz was OK as was the wine I tried hubby stuck to beer but really it was the constant short stocking, running out and general lack of any service. 6 beers for a lounge and no one to refill is poor. People were walking out in frustration when staff said no there is no more water! We heard lots of people complaining.
I should say I did meet with the manager who was apologetic and said keen to learn from their mistakes and do better in future. He also provided a meal to celebrate our anniversary - albeit late! However as I stated above even on leaving no offer of help with luggage and when I returned home points incorrectly awarded and contacted them to no response (later fixed by head office).
There is a supermarket and a number of restaurants close by as well as Cernobbio with lots of restaurants around 10 minutes walk and Como itself is a pleasant enough 30 - 40 minute walk and the boat stop is 3...
Read moreWe stayed here in July as a family of 5, two adults & 3 teens. At check in, we were unable to get connecting rooms or rooms side by side despite this being assured in our booking in advance. We had to return back down to reception to try & get rooms closer together as having 3 young teens down the other end of the corridor was never going to work. We did get two rooms a bit nearer, not ideal but we had no choice but to go with it. We stayed for 10 nights which is a long stay for this hotel we found out. We enjoyed our stay but 5 nights would have been plenty to see & do everything in Como. ||The hotel itself is lovely, the rooms are a little dated & tight for space but here's the big let down.. no balconies to sit out on to enjoy the views or relax with a drink etc. All you have are double doors that open to a steel barrier, such a missed opportunity with this hotel as the views are so nice. Our room overlooked the pool which is located across a small road at the front of the hotel, this sounds odd but it works here as the road feels private & quiet. The pool itself was lovely, smallish but never got too busy. There was also a smaller whirlpool which felt like getting into a warm jacuzzi outside. Sun loungers are located on the grass beside the pool, most of the time it was fine getting enough for our family. We only ate in one of their restaurants twice 'Kincho', once for pizza at the pool on arrival & then once for a very disappointing evening meal, the portions were non existent & the prices exorbitant. We left still hungry & disappointed. I would say skip eating at the hotel & head to nearby Cernobbio about a 10 minute walk away on the water. There's a nice selection of restaurants there & the lakeside views are just so pretty. Getting into Como itself from the hotel is no problem at all, the ferry is just 5 minutes walk away & takes about 9 minutes to reach Como, really pleasant to do. You can also walk into Como, its a busy road & takes about 30 mins walking briskly, myself & my husband did this walk for exercise a few days & enjoyed the views along the way. The ferries from Como back to the hotel don't run late, last ferry is around 7.45pm in the evening so if you want to stay out late in Como you will need to grab a taxi, bus or face the long walk. Also, we never risked taking the last ferry as the queues could be quite long so we always went with the second last ferry just in case we didn't fit on. There is a great supermarket beside the hotel, handy for anything you could need, there is nothing really directly around the hotel itself so best options are Cernobbio very nearby or heading into Como. The hotel seems to host a lot of corporate events & weddings etc, there were about 5 in the duration of our 10 day stay there. ||We're Marriott Bonvoy members so we are really familiar with this brand, you don't get any of the usual perks of membership with this hotel so that's worth noting if that matters to Marriott members. Overall The Sheraton Lake Como is a decent base to get a taste of Como, we would return but for a much shorter stay & mainly to explore more of the surrounding...
