We stayed at leonardo da Vinci Saturday to Wednesday. When we arrived it was really quiet. We compared it to an abandoned theme park. But this changed before the end of the day. |By the time evening came the place was starting to look a bit livelier. |We were given room 4001, which is right outside the first pool. It was a great place to be located within the hotel. There is a self service drinks bar that is open 10-5:30 which serves beer, wine, soft drinks, and hot drinks by the pool with ice lollies available too. |Our room was pretty rubbish inside to be honest. Four of us cramped up in one room, With one double bed and two sofa beds taking up all the living area. I had to struggle to get through to the bathroom at the back of the living area/bedroom, I got a huge bruise on my leg where I kept hitting the same part of my leg on the corner of the bed when struggling to get through. The tv didn’t work but I wasn’t too bothered as we don’t really watch tv whilst away. There is a small fridge. A hairdryer which isn’t very powerful so I recommend taking your own. There is a very small safe in the floor which is free to use. There is little to no storage space so we had to keep our clothes in our suitcases on the floor. |Our bathroom was a bit of a shambles, the shower head wouldn’t stay up high it kept slipping down. I touched a knob on the bath and it fell off into my hand. |It’s extremely noisy you can constantly hear the water trickling in the pipes and it’s worst when neighbours at the sides and above are using the shower or toilet. |The rooms were also absolutely freezing. The heating didn’t work, neither did the air conditioning. We had to put our joggers and jumpers on at night because it was so cold, |The first day we did explore the whole area looking at the pools up at the top with the slide and the trampolines for the kids, and crazy golf. But there was no one about and these seemed abandoned. Chains on the trampoline to stop you going on. No one available to tell you where to get the clubs for crazy golf. It’s too far a walk from reception to be going back and forward if that’s the case. This is probably why it seems abandoned. But we didn’t venture up there again. The place has a huge ant problem also. So we insured we didn’t have anything sweet or drop any crumbs in our room. They were everywhere. Lots of ants nests.|The food was just ok. It seems to be the same things every day. salad, meat with veg or pasta, two of my children (teens) are coeliac and they found it a struggle to find something to eat. The manager did offer gluten free pasta but the teens were bought out such a small amount, probably only enough for a toddler. It was sometimes difficult to find a clean plate, and there was a horrible smell of dirty dish water on plates and utensils which put us off eating. |There are snacks available during the day and evening near reception. These were biscuits, crisps, cakes and ice cream. |The hotel has a shuttle service that takes you into limone and back, we walked into limone most days and got the shuttle bus back, |We did think that evening meal should go on a bit longer 6:15-8:30pm. We went on an excursion with TUI to Venice was picked up at 7am so missed breakfast (it starts at 7:30) we didn’t get back till 8:45pm so also missed evening meal. We left Venice with TUI at 5pm so was extremely hungry when we got back having had lunch around 1pm in Venice. TUI said the trip takes approx 8 hours, it took almost 14 hours, so keep this in mind if you decide to go. We were far too tired when getting back to walk 30 minutes into limone to get some food. |All other hotels I’ve ever been to finish food later than 8:30pm. To me this seems early. Especially considering locals tend to eat later in Italy. |The beach was lovely. But a lot of steps down and back up which is a struggle for me as I have arthritis. |I paid the tourist tax which was €32 for 4 of us for 5 days. I did read on the map they gave us that you are exempt from tourist tax if you’re disabled. 3 out of 4 of us are disabled but we wasn’t made aware of this when paying, also it says if you have already paid it you can’t claim it back if you’re exempt. |I wouldn’t return to this hotel however Limone itself...
Read moreI read a lot of negative reviews before I booked this place, and was a little cautious because of some of them, especially regarding the food, so I thought I'd write my own honest review about my stay. I visited at the end of May with my teenage son.|First impressions of the reception and lobby were very positive, and the staff were very helpful when checking in. They all seem to speak many languages including English and German.|We stayed in a room in the Villa down on the lake front. Upon arrival at the room, it was evident there was some damage to the door where someone had previously forced open the lock. The lock had been repaired and the door was secure, but the damage to the wooden door requires repair. It was unsightly and didn't fill me with confidence, but there were no issues during the week we were there.|The decor within the rooms is tired and dated (think 1970s) but the room was immaculately clean, and cleaned daily. Fresh bedding and towels were supplied almost daily too.|All the fixtures and fittings within the room require updating. Everything worked, but it just looked tired.|The bathroom was clean and the water was hot. The shower tray/cubicle needed re-sealing, as after every shower there was a large pool of water over the floor which needed mopping up with a towel. I chose the villa, as it was listed as one of the bigger rooms within the hotel, but it felt (and looked) small. However, it was perfectly fine for the 2 of us.|The view from the balcony/terrace was breathtaking. |I'll break the food down into meal times:|Breakfast - A large choice available, from cold meats, cheese, salad and fruits, to pastries, breads and preserves, and a "full English" option. All self-serve buffet style. For 5 of the 7 days we stayed, the cooked breakfast was tepid at best, one day it was stone cold. That was my only complaint about Breakfast and the food in general.|Lunchtime - So much choice available. Hot and cold choices available, varying from pasta, pizza, fruit, vegetables and a selection of hot and cold dishes. Those who have said the choice is limited must be Very Fussy eaters. There is literally something for everyone and it was tasty.|Evening meal - Once again, so much choice available. Salad bar, anti-pasti selection of Pasta dishes, and main course choice of vegetables, rice, potatoes, meats and fish. And a large dessert counter. Nothing to complain about with regards the food, except that the cooked breakfast was cold.|All drinks at all times are self-service, from tea and flavoured teas, to coffees, water, fruit juices, soft drinks, beer, wines and spirits. A great selection of drinks which was constantly topped up. And snacks were available all day long at various places throughout the hotel ranging from sweet cakes and pastries, to crisps and pretzels, to ice creams and lollies.|I and my teenager, found the entertainment to be sub-par. A range of local singers and musicians perform each night between 2000-2200. They are NOT GOOD, in my opinion. One multi-instrument playing chap, was the best of the bunch, he was quite good. The rest were like karaoke singers. On 2 nights (of 7) they omitted any adult entertainment in favour of a kids disco, for 2 hours, incorporating Agadoo and Baby Shark, amongst many other similar songs!!|It takes 12 minutes to walk into Limone town where they have many bars with much better entertainment. There's also a beach bar which has a DJ on weekends, which is great if you're into that, but not so great if you want an early night as the bass reverberates through the windows and walls. The pool was refreshing but pleasant, the lake itself was FREEZING. Overall, we both thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The many different towns around the lake are great to visit, the scenery all around is beautiful, the weather in May was fantastic, the food was great, the entertainment was poor but laughable, the rooms are tired but liveable for a week or 2. Would I go...
Read moreWe arrived early hours of the morning. Greeted by a staff member who gave us relevant hotel information on a print out which was handy as our Italian wasn't very good.
We had a superior room and had an excellent view of the lake, scenery was stunning. Thought the WiFi was fine to be honest, I've seen a few reviews say it's poor quality but I didn't have a bad experience with it. It can be a little slow at times but you can still use your phones etc.
The rooms are a little dated but it's not a concern for me, we just wanted somewhere to sleep. It was clean as well from our experience. Room came stocked with 1x1.5L bottle of water and a pack of local snacks, you'll probably need to stock up more by yourself if you're loooking to spend more time in your room rather than near the drinks machines. Only things I will say was the air conditioning was pretty weak, we slept through a few humid nights due to it not being very powerful. Also, the shower water seemed to seep through under the glass somehow, had to use one of the towels to catch it all.
Hotel food was good and it was different every day for us, there were a couple of dishes that were repeated a couple of times but I had something new to try each day. Honestly I feel like most reviews are fussy eaters, flavours across the board were good, you just have to be early to make sure the food that's out doesn't go cold when you get it. Some highlights were the sausage lasagna and this mixed vegetable frittata. We were a bit late for breakfast and parts of it were cold but we were pretty much on time for lunch and dinner and we got hot food. This is only due to the hotel not using hot plates when the food is out.
Special shoutout to the waiters and waitresses there as well, they were so attentive to empty plates etc and they were all friendly, even the new ones that were in training were polite as well. Housekeepers did a great job cleaning the rooms while we were out as well but they didn't always fully lock the door, still need to use a key to get in but the lock did 4 full rotation to lock and we came back a couple of times to not needing to do that.
Self service bar was fine, there was 8 or 9 spirit options inlcuding limoncello, a beer tap and wine and soft drinks were in a dispenser. Did get a bit repetitive after a few days of drinking the same things though. Everything else behind the bar you had to pay for so make the most of the machines.
You pretty much need to go to Limone and use the ferry service if you're looking to eat out or just explore towns, there's not much that's immediately local to the hotel. I recommend Malcesine, lovely little place and was only €13 for a return ticket per person. If you do decide to get the ferry over the lake as well, just expect no one to know how to queue properly. It's just the way it is there. Riva was very nice as well, went to a restaurant called Bella Napoli which I strongly recommend.
Overall the stay was pleasant, we enjoyed our stay but it was difficult to sleep in such a humid room. Could be resolved with better air conditioning. View on the balcony was fantastic though. Not sure I'd book another holiday here though, it feels like one of them places where you do it once and then you can say you've done it. 4 nights is all you need to explore the northern part of the...
