My booking at the San Benedetto Hotel was born out of necessity, requiring a base for my trip to Rome for Pope Francis' funeral. The listing on Booking.com suggested proximity to the Vatican and convenient transport links. However, the inclusion of "Toilet Paper" as a listed facility should have been my first red flag. The description also advertised non-smoking rooms and breakfast. The hotel's location on a back street in what appeared to be a rough area felt unsuitable for tourists. While the two gentlemen at the front desk were indeed charming and welcoming, with one speaking excellent English, the hotel itself felt like stepping back into a bygone era. A strong smell of cigarette smoke permeated the building, particularly in the lift and hallways. The room was extremely dated, featuring an old portable CRT television with a telescopic aerial. Basic amenities were absent – no facilities for making a drink, not even a bottle of water. The bathroom was reminiscent of something from an old movie, devoid of even basic toiletries like soap. The lukewarm water from the tap took an age to appear, making the prospect of a shower unappealing. It's been years since I've had to travel with my own toiletries. While there were ample towels, they were old and rough. Breakfast consisted of a microwaved croissant and packaged French toast – with no other options apparent. Although the hotel is listed as a 2-star property on Booking.com, this rating seems overly generous. The walk to the Vatican was a significant hour for me. Ultimately, I found a more conveniently located hotel (at a considerable extra cost) and happily moved, forfeiting the cost of my second night at the San Benedetto. I was surprised to find this property listed on Booking.com and strongly advise careful consideration, especially for those with urgent accommodation needs. Additionally, there was no...
Read moreI have had the pleasure of staying in the Hotel Benedetto many times and look forward to planning my next stay in this hotel in Rome as soon as possible. Although I am 100% sure that I will continue to stay in this hotel during my vacations in Rome, I decided to check out your website. I, however, stumbled across a comment from another visitor which I found extremely disturbing. Instead of listing the positive and negative aspects of the hotel, this person decided to verbally attack its’ owner, to slander him in a public forum, an act which is morally and legally unacceptable!! During my stays in the Hotel Benedetto, I had the pleasure of getting to know Mr. Di Pietro. He is fluent in many languages and, aside from being very intelligent, possesses a remarkable understanding and knowledge of other cultures. I find the accusation that Mr. Di Pietro is obsessed with cats simply absurd. Anyone who knows anything about the Roman culture knows that cats were and are an essential part of Roman tradition. Mr. Di Pietro does not worship cats; he simply introduces his guests to “a sensitive part of human Roman legacy”, a service that many hotels simply do not offer. For those of you looking for a place to worship felines, I am sorry to tell you that Mr. Di Pietro will not be able to help you with that problem. I recommend planning your vacation in Egypt; there you can find many shrines and even a few museums to fit your needs. For those visitors looking to experience the authentic Roman culture, the Hotel Benedetto can offer you a rare selection of historical maps dating back to the 1840’s and soom examples of Etruscan vases...
