We booked this delightful hotel based on its reasonable price and a great deal of highly complimentary reviews, all of which were very accurate!
Le Ancore is perfectly positioned directly opposite the tiny harbour (where you can get the ferry to Capri and towns along the Amalfi coast easily and avoid the crowds boarding in Sorrento), and a row of restaurants and bars of all types and price ranges most of which we tried and would recommend. It's easy to get into the local town of Vico Equense if you like a healthy walk up hill (about 30 minutes), otherwise the hotel offers a free connection ride which you can book with a little notice.
Our room was just what we wanted. Beautifully decorated (especially the bathroom with what I suspect were local tiles), clean with daily attendance, and air-conditioning. There were plenty of towels, including a set in a bag with flipflops for the beach. There was a balcony overlooking the harbour, the bay of Naples and the most spectacular view of mount Vesuvius (I think most rooms had a sea view). The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The breakfast was very good and included cereals, yoghurts and fruit/ fruit juices, meats, cheese and breads.
We soon developed a feeling of not needing to travel far because this place had everything for a relaxed break, however trains and buses from Vico Equense were frequent and could take you to most places cheaply and with the most stunning views en route.
This is a small and lovingly run hotel which I think offers the personal touch that some larger places cannot. This makes Le Ancore stand out from the crowd and therefore would not hesitate to come back here and recommend others to...
Read moreThis review is for their restaurant, which they have conveniently not added to Google Maps for reviews. So I'll add it here since it's part of this hotel.
We went there thinking that the prices might be reflective of quality but tragically, it was the worst place we ate while in Italy. I had the slow cooked cod on some tastless green sauce (26 euros). It was more like a starter. The other who I was with had the chickpea burger (18 euros). The chickpea burger was the worst - just a load of chickpeas blended and made into an unseasoned, bland burger shape with rocket perched on top. No buns, no flavour, no sides, no sauce. All for 18 euros - what a joke.
They did bring out some dry bread - but no olive oil, dips, or sauce to soak up. Just an assortment of dry bread.
On top of that, they have the cheek to charge 5 euros just for eating in the restaurant. The total cost of those two unsatisfying meals (plus still water) was 53 euros.
Definitely avoid and go to one of the other restaurants...
Read moreThis place grew on me during the 4 days of my stay. It’s not in Sorrento and it’s not at the top of the cliffs. But it is down at the waterfront with beach access and steps from a marina. It is much quieter and much less touristy of an area which I came to appreciate. It is clean and the staff is super friendly. They have a solid breakfast buffet spread in the morning. The rooms seem a bit sparsely decorated, but maybe that’s normal for a more traditional Italian hotel. The bathroom had a great soaking tub and fabulous tile work. They made it easy to book excursions and ferries to Positano, Amalfi and Capri. The boat leaves from the dock only steps from the hotel. You do need to have euros for the booking, and there is no exchange or ATM...
