This campground is fantastic. I want to live here forever. It is huge and well spaced, and a tent site costs only ¥400 per night. You can pitch in the open central meadow or in the surrounding forest for a more secluded spot. The meadow has a tall light pole, so if you are sensitive to light, choose a spot in the trees. The manager is wonderful, extremely kind, and clearly cares for the place. He keeps the grounds immaculate without making them feel artificial. You still feel immersed in nature, aside from that one big light in the open field. He is also very knowledgeable about local Ainu culture and recommended museums and sites where you can experience it. Facilities are excellent. There are two bathrooms, one in the forest area and one by reception. The reception side restroom has heated seats and a washlet, which feels like a luxury in the middle of nature. Trash must be separated, but disposal is free. There is a designated area near the reception for fireworks if you want to do it the Japanese way and set off some sparklers in the evening. There is also a designated area for making large bonfires because it is not allowed to make a fire next to your tent on the ground unless you have a barbecue set or stove. I stayed in early October and there were hardly any people. It was wonderfully quiet, with only the wind and falling leaves. There are four or five hot spring facilities in town within walking distance, and reception sells a discount ticket for one of them. For a real treat, drive 15 minutes up to the Tokachidake Onsen area. The first onsen you reach has an adjacent campsite, an excellent sauna with a natural cold plunge. In the sauna you can pour water on the stones for steam — real Finnish style! Plus you have mountain views from the outdoor baths. At the very top of the road, another onsen offers sweeping mountain vistas and a free terrace viewpoint open even for non-bathers. In autumn the foliage is spectacular. Bottom line: unbeatable value, a kind and thoughtful owner, peaceful setting and great onsen options nearby — and bring an eye mask if you plan to sleep in the meadow.

Yet again, Hokkaido delivers on an outstanding municipal campground for the poultry sum of ¥400. This one is particularly big and well wooded. Plenty of out of the way spots to perch your tent and fire up the yakiniku. Don't pay any attention to those ingrates who complain; they don't know what they have before them, and deserve none of it.
