Our travel agent booked this family-run inn and I deliberately didn't research it before we arrived, so we really didn't know exactly what to expect, and we were very pleased. It might not have been the poshest hotel we stayed at, but it was the most delightful with the most delicious food. We had two breakfasts and dinners here, and each menu was varied and beautifully presented. (We had just stayed at Benesse House, on Naoshima, and the food here was even better.) The multi-course meals (kaiseki) focused on autumn flavours and colours. It's worth staying here for the Japanese breakfast alone.||||Each day we were given beautifully laundered kimonos to wear with lovely silk over jackets-- just about everybody wore these for all meals. One the first night there was a mix of Japanese diners and Australian walkers, and on our second night we were the only non-Japanese. The staff spoke limited English but could not have done more to make us welcome.||||Just is a traditional inn, so you sleep on futons on the floor. The room is prepared while you are at dinner and then the futons are put away while you are at breakfast. We had a large room across the front of the hotel on the 4th floor and it was very quiet at night.||||The traditional hot baths were very relaxing, and as another reviewer noted the natural hot-water food baths in the village are real treat if you've been walking along the Nakasendo Trail. (We walked from Magome to Tsumago, and the train and bus connections work well; the hotel has timetables for all connections. As we were advised, the route is easiest from Magome to Tsumago.) If you are walking the trail, this is an excellent stopping point, and they send bags on to the...
Read moreOur room was spacious and comfortable, Japanese-style so we slept on futons on the floor. Bathroom was functional.||We chose half board which included breakfast and dinner. As we dressed in our kimonos for dinner we were unprepared for the wonderful evening in store. A party of four, we had the dining room to ourselves and the attentive service of a delightful waiter. We had not expected an eight course feast of delicious food presented with professionalism and care. The dishes were thoughtfully prepared and beautifully balanced, each course a culinary delight of Japanese flavours. We chose a Kiso Vlley white wine to accompany our meal. The whole experience was a gastronomic delight and we compliment the very talented kitchen team on a most memorable stay.||The Japanese breakfast was again beautifully presented and well-balanced, definitely a contrast to our Western style breakfasts.||We did not use the Onsen but took turns in the massage chair!||Our only negative comment would be that our room faced the street and the lighting of ryokan made our room very bright at night.||Congratulations to this wonderfully run...
