Ine is a magical place near Kyoto not to be missed and this accommodation was the perfect way to experience it. First off the view from the private deck and onsen was the best in town: private yet beautiful. The host was very professional, accommodating and spoke great English. The beds were comfortable. The only downside was that the price ($380) is way more than we had paid for comparable level of accommodation anywhere else in Japan and this one came without a meal plan so definitely not a cheap place to stay. Food is a bit of a catch in this little fishing town (no pun intended!): there’s no breakfast served anywhere unless you’ve reserved one in advance and dinner restaurants are scarce as well so reservations are also highly recommended. It’s the only place in Japan so far in our trip where food was a potential issue if you hadn’t...

Unfortunately, my memories of staying here are disappointing. I am a foreigner who has lived in Japan for more than 10 years and travel there every month, and I have never been forced to make a copy of my ID card.
The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare website states:
Q. Is it acceptable to ask a foreign guest with a domestic address to present or photocopy his/her residence card for identification purposes? A. No. While it is acceptable to ask for a copy of the resident card at the discretion of the local government, there is no legal basis for such a request.
I have an address in Japan, I asked them not to make a photocopy, but they said they would not allow me to stay unless I provided identification for the photocopy. If I come to this place and am told this, I have no choice but to comply. I was sad, angry, and uncomfortable to be forced to submit it without any legal compulsion. The hotel is racist and breaking Japanese law. I have filed an official report with Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
The hotel room itself was comfortable and nice, but I can't shake the impression that I was treated in a racist manner and the interaction at check-in. The rest of my stay was a blur. I am a travel influencer and own my own travel agency and I was staying to determine if I should recommend this hotel to my followers and clients, but I don't want to make my clients feel uncomfortable, so I am not willing to stay or recommend this hotel. It was a real disappointment.
Read moreOne of the best stays in Japan. Booking a place in Ine bay is tough as most of the places were snapped within 2-3 months in advance. Room was spacious and clean. Only thing was the bathroom light was too dim. The carpet on the floor, on top of a heating pad was very thoughtful but it should have been properly secured as my boyfriend slipped and fell while stepping onto the carpet from the elevated bed area. The staff was very helpful in helping us secure dinner place. Food is a little hard to get unless you are driving. Most places require reservation. Overall, it was a very nice...
