For the price, I'd say this is a very good hotel. The location is excellent, overlooking Sakurajima, and the rooms are very comfortable. On check in, I requested an extra blanket. The service person promptly delivered one to my room and the surprised me by carefully fitting it onto my bed. Eating the dinner in the western restaurant, the food was quite good and the service was excellent. It was a little surprising to discover such high quality of service in a place so removed from the cities. From the first floor restaurant, visitors are treated to an excellent view of the vaulted ceiling. The architecture of this particular hotel is quite impressive for its modern flavour. ||||Of course the highlight of this kind of hotel was the hot spring, onsen. This one was particularly good. There were several types of bags including a water spa and dads of various temperatures. There was a sauna and even a full Olympic size swimming pool. I must mention something very important about the Hot Spring. It seems to include some kind of sulfur or other chemical that that in my case destroyed the UV coating on my glasses. It was really my fault for wearing glasses inside the Hot Spring, however, I would highly recommend other visitors remove their glasses while using the bath. ||||They were only a very few things about the hotel that I did not like. One of them was the fact that ice was not provided for free. In a hotel that gives you such nice accommodations, free Internet, a beautiful hotspot with many amenities, etc., why can't they also provide free ice? I was frankly puzzled. The other thing that I didn't like was the fact that they required a photocopy of my driver license. The next morning, I asked them if I could have the copy back at the time of checkout, yet I was told that they keep the copy. When I requested further that they destroy the copy, they told me that they don't do that. If my bank can lose my personal information, which has happened, then how can I possibly trust a hotel not to lose my personal information? I wish they didn't have to take photocopies...
Read moreThis hotel definitely exceeded all our expectations, given their 3-stars ratings. Right from the warm doorman’s reception and greetings, to the checking in counters, the rooms and dining experience, all make for an incredible stay, amidst the superb ambiance and beautiful environment with lots to see and experience. The rooms are extremely cozy, spacious and comfortable. Lots of quality amenities, comfortable beds, and everyone has their own space within the room. Walk outside the rooms and soak in the luscious atmosphere, wide clean walkways amidst the photogenic spots in and around the hotel. This hotel has two towers connected by a link bridge at the third floor. This extraordinary bridge has a travelator (moving walkway) in one direction, and along the entire bridge, are lined with history and artifacts of the many prefectures of Japan. Use the travelator when going from one building to the next for your morning buffet breakfast, and after breakfast, with a full stomach, take a stroll back to your room and read about the history of Japan’s prefectures. Such a thoughtful practical design and a resourceful way of presenting the history of Japan to its audience. We regretted booking only one night stay, and would definitely want to extend our stay in this fantastic hotel if not for our packed itinerary visiting Kagoshima and Miyazaki. We will definitely want to stay in this hotel again should we come back to Kagoshima. Love it, love it, love it. Need we say...
Read moreAdmittedly I did choose to stay in this hotel mostly for the building designed by the late Kurokawa, but it wasn't as bad as some on here had lead me to believe. Yes, the rooms are caught in a time warp of cane furniture, peach tones and brass fittings that would rival the set of the Golden Girls, but it has been maintained so well. The artificial plants and piped music in the corridors and lift lobbies were classic. From the outside it looks as though a UFO has landed.||||In terms of being a hotel, the staff were excellent, everything was super efficient and I must recommend the Japanese restaurant. They tailored a 7-course banquet to meet my eating preferences at an incredible price and served it to me in my own private room. The cafe in the atrium is also good.||||The one great disappointment was the buffet restaurant over the skybridge in the annex building. I hope the Japanese options at breakfast were good because the Western ones were awful. I've experienced better hospital cafeterias and the furniture was well past its use by date. This is the only reason i can't award 5/5. If staying here, I believe the atrium cafe might also do a light breakfast. Ask, because the buffet in the annex is...
