The hotel is located in a lush, green area with hiking trails. Staff is incredibly friendly. The onsen itself is huge with a large central mixed area, and female-only and male-exclusive smaller areas. People are not shy in the mixed area. The temperature of the water varies based on which bath and how close to the water inlet one is.
Breakfast is amazing with almost every imaginable traditional Japanese breakfast food. Dinner is a multi-course meal that is also varied and delicious.
Rooms are mixed modern and transitional with family spaces having twin beds and futons that staff puts out at night to accommodate groups of four.
The hotel itself feels dated but in an elegant old-luxury sort of way. Weekdays are tranquil and peaceful. Weekends are busier but still very calm.
This spa tends to be Japanese-exclusive but it's worth going through the difficulties for English-only speakers, as the entire experience is worthwhile.

If you are here to explore the countryside of Kyushu - then this is an excellent place to be based…if not visiting for the walking, then it might be a bit remote for you. ||But if you stay you will enjoy the big added advantage of a huge and wonderful spa/onsen (if you haven’t experienced onsen - please do try - a must for your trip to Japan).
