Orient Hotel Kochi — Hotel in Kochi

We chose this hotel for the fine location which allowed us to access the castle, museums and markets. Over the years, we have slept on many futons in Japanese style hotel rooms but the pads here were the thinnest we have ever encountered. I assume hardy Japanese business travelers are okay with them but others should probably avoid the Japanese style rooms. We were also stymied by the air conditioning which was turned off during the recent unseasonably warm weather. All our usual Internet tricks to decipher the kanji on the control panel failed and it took me over 20 minutes of negotiating to persuade a desk clerk to assist us in getting the air conditioning turned on. Waste of time trying to make a reservation with JTB if you have a foreign name and credit card. The hotel website redirects you to book with JTB but it keeps encountering errors that forces you to restart the process from the beginning. The first problem is that it only accepts Japanese characters for names. If you translate your foreign name into Japanese, but use Google translate in your browser, the website will give an error. You must first switch off Google translate. After several other errors, if you make it to the payment step, it has problems accepting foreign credit cards. After trying for 1 hour, with 12 errors and restarts, the room became unavailable and I was unable to attempt a fourth credit card. Don't...

The location is very central and within walking distance to main tourist attractions like Kochi Castle Ruins and Hirome Market. We could park right in front of the hotel. There is rear parking too. The buffet breakfast is very good and it caters for Japanese style as well as western style. The staff is helpful though English is limited. The room price was the cheapest for the whole trip.||The photo of the room from their website appears ok. In fact, it is very tiny. We could not open our two suitcases on the floor at the same time.
