Can't recommend this place enough! It's a really wonderful onsen guesthouse in a fantastic location! We visited as a couple to hike in the area, and stayed for 4 nights.
The room was a good size and very comfortable - the futons were nice to sleep on. The only downside was there wasn't much natural light in the room but this wasn't a big issue.
There's a communal lounge which is very comfortable with low seats and a wood burning stove, nice to sit and read there. The onsen (hot spring) itself was fantastic! We only used the private one, which guests can use for 30 minutes per day, which was amazing. We mostly used the outside one and looked at the stars.
The hosts were fantastic, the two younger people spoke good English and were incredibly helpful for our whole stay! We're vegetarian, and they made reservations for us for dinner at different restaurants and even collected us from a restaurant after dark one evening. They gave us recommendations for hiking, and were generally lovely.
The area itself is great, not touristy with Westerners but well set up for tourists generally. There's a bus service that will take you to different points around Mt Norikura - we got the bus to Sanbondaki falls and hiked the rest of the way up, and got the bus back again. Beautiful Autumn colours, waterfalls all around the area, very nice little cafes and shops dotted around, good souvenirs.
It was the highlight of our trip to Japan! We stayed for 4 nights, most people seem to...

Read moreWe really enjoyed our 3 nights at this Onsen. The traditional room is spacious, the food is absolutely delicious and made with care. It is an excellent place to relax with the beautiful wooden onsen, the classical music and the fire in the public living room.
Staff was very friendly and helpful. At first we were looking to stay in Kami-Kochi but we were very happy to have stayed in Norikura Kogen. You can easily take the bus to Kami-Kochi for a day trip, but you can also step outside of the hotel to explore the beauty of...
