Fumoto Ryokan was the five star experience I was looking for. After traveling around, popping in and out of cities and hotels, they gave me the tranquil experience I didn’t know I needed.
You check in and there are about three to five people ready to take care of you. Everyone is attentive and kind.
The rooms are peaceful and clean, with tatami floors to place futons at night (which the staff do for you).
The dinners and breakfast are Kaiseki style, which might be alarming to some, but was just a treat for us. All of the food was delicious! We were served a Kumamoto delicacy the first night, Basashi (horse meat) which I did not partake in. The third night was Shabu-Shabu, which was the best hotpot I’ve ever had.. the broth.. I still dream about it.
The onsen there were so peaceful, I didn’t want to leave. I could spend hours in there, completely isolating myself from the outside world. They were all private, except for two public baths which I’m sure were beautiful. There are plenty of onsen baths to choose from, so no need to be anxious and wake up early or skip dinner to get a good one.
This was the experience we were looking for, and they gave it. Fumoto Ryokan is a diamond in the rough. Kurakawa Onsen is a quite interesting little town that we enjoyed very much, but Fumoto Ryokan was the highlight of it, as well as the people there.
Thank you to everyone who took care of us, I know we...
Read moreFumoto is a lovely ryokan in the Kurokawa Onsen village. Their service was exceptional right from the get-go as they helped to unload all our heavy luggage right to our room, as well as valet our car. The staff speaks very good English and was helpful and accomodating to all our requests.
Food was amazing. Breakfast and dinner and unique every day and we left feeling stuffed every time. The rooms themselves are older but very spacious. They have done their best to modernize each room. I had a tough time sleeping on the futons but they were able to provide a mattress which helped immensely.
The private onsens themselves are great. Lots of variety between the main building and the annex. The annex onsens are more dated but the standing onsen is unique. The main building onsens are modern and lovely. My only issue was that the men's public onsen did not provide much in terms of privacy. Low amounts of foliage means that it is easy to see into the public bath, which is a bit unnerving.
I would fully recommend this ryokan to anyone visiting Kurokawa. Thank you for a...
Read moreKurokawa Onsen is a gorgeous little village and this ryokan is located right in the middle of it.||The staff were super helpful and spoke great English. Given the location and experience, the value for money at £240pn was not bad at all, but this is not a luxury ryokan.||The food was not bad at all, with fairly standard Kyushu ryokan fare. The horse sashimi was an interesting addition. ||We probably made a mistake by booking a room in the annex, which is over the road from the main building. Access to this is through as very unappealing car park and every time you go to your room you feel like you are entering the service area / storeroom - this could definitely be improved on.||The varied private onsens are great, especially the standing one. The public onsen, right by the river, is superb. The bridge that takes you to this part of the ryokan is also super...
