Excellent guesthouse, clean and tidy, in tranquil surroundings. It's off the main street. Koi pond and water wheel just at the entrance(fun to watch as you eat Breakfast).
It's a steep hill up, and maybe i should have followed Googlemaps directions to take the back road (non cobbled road). Depending on where you are coming from, the luggage forwarding service might make more sense.
Common area has a TV, sofa, a large bean bag and two smaller bean bags. There is a microwave, toaster, kettle and induction hob(very quick so be sure not to leave your cooking!). You can buy some food from the supermarket at the bottom of the hill to cook in the kitchen if you want, but otherwise, Haginoya restaurant is highly recommended! Mika can help you with reservations at the restaurant.
Breakfast was lovely with a small platter of fruit each morning. If you wanted a bit more to eat, there was cereal - chocolate rings /sugar coated cornflakes.
The "smell" that other guests were complaining about is merely the straw tatami mat and isn't offensive, but i guess some people are particularly sensitive to smell. Bedding was very comfortable and rooms were warm enough.
Easy location to start trek to Tsumago. If you take the bus back, keep an eye out for the lookout point and ring bell to stop bus(Jinba stop) at the top of hill so you have less walking to get back to accommodation.
So far, this is my favourite accommodation in Japan, and we hope to return some time soon! Highly...
Read moreThis is probably one of my favourite places to have stayed ever. It is right in the main road of Magome, and the host has been very welcoming. She also offered to change my reservation for a single (2 person) room to a bunkbed room which cost far less (and I had it to myself). Another guest said the host had make such an offer in the guest's favour as well for somebody else. In additional she was very helpful in helping find the trail to Tsumago, some other sights and making a reservation for the only restaurant open in Magome.
The rooms are traditional Japanese and I find cosy. You're in a tiny postal town so of course it's not gonna be 40m2 rooms. There's plenty space for stowing your luggage and sleeping, which is what you would do there. I have no idea what other reviews meant with smelly, everything was clean and neutral smelling.
The whole minshuku has a wonderful style that I loved, clear (traditional) Japanese with modern touches. Did I mention the view out the back is amazing? Highly recommend staying here if you plan on...
Read moreThe guesthouse was so clean and well-maintained. I loved the interior design - it's a mix of modern furniture and old Japanese style rooms. Our room has a beautiful view of the mountains and was lovely when it snowed
