Chikatsuyu Pon — Hotel in Tanabe

This was an absolutely fantastic experience - the very first place we visited on our very first trip to Japan, and Masa and Izumi have raised the bar so high! This is such a cozy place with a homely vibe. We loved our spacious room and futon beds. Everything was spotlessly clean and new but didn’t feel “artificial” and soulless at all.

But, most importantly, the owners made us feel welcome, they have a great sense of humour and their attention to detail and devotion to making their guesthouse a nice place to stay at have left us in awe. They cooked some of the most amazing meals of our lives from locally sourced ingredients. I couldn’t wish for a better stay, this is a true highlight of our trip. Wishing Izumi and Masa all the best - we will definitely recommend Chikatsuyu Pon to our friends and would love to come back! Arigato...

Izumi and her neighbour were the best hosts! The dinner was amazing, cooked lovingly by the pair and conversations about our travels, hikes, food and fruits warmed my heart at the end of a rainy hike from Takijiri to Chikatsuyu. Breakfast and lunch were the perfect amount that fueled the full day hike to Kumano Hongu Taisha the next day.

They were very experienced travellers of different trails and routes (different ways of Camino de Santiago, Nakasendo, Kumano Kodo etc.), and provided very valuable information.

The house was super clean and I slept very well.

The website is super clear on the details and easy to check for availability. You can book without going through the tourism bureau website. I got a reply from Izumi the same day.

It is a fantastic location for the Kumano Kodo Pilgrims. You will be staying at a perfect home of experimented Pilgrims. Perfect English and Spanish is spoken making very easy and helpful to solve every doubt. I was helped to find great locations on the road. The hosts are wonderful and the room/facilities immaculate. It's a new home but in a traditional style and everything is clean and comfortable. Host made a the chestnut roasting. It was fantastic to see him preparing them. The dinner was delicious, elegantly served and made. The cutlery and ceramics very beautiful.
