This is the place for those on a budget or for those who don't mind roughing it a little. Tokyo is very expensive and for our final three days in Japan, we reserved a large room here at the Hana An Guesthouse. We were pleasantly surprised. This is an old house recently turned into a guest house. Each room has either traditional Japanese futons placed onto tatami mat floors or custom-built bunkbeds. There are a total of 5 rooms for rent here. There is a common kitchen on the first floor that is immaculately clean. There are two shared toilet rooms and a shared shower room. Each of these locks from the inside when one person is inside. Though my wife and I traveled with two teenage daughters, neither we nor our daughters had any concerns about the place. It was for sleeping, and we were fine with the clean, no-frills approach. We met the other guests. They were from Korea, China, or the United States. The owner, Kaoru, speaks no English, so her daughter handles the reservations and communication. Both were responsive to our questions, though one should bear in mind that this is not a hotel and that there is no front desk. Much of it runs on a trust system. There is an old-school public sento (bathhouse only a block away), there is a laundromat a block away, and the Kanamachi train station is no more than a 10-minute walk. There are tons of restaurants, stores, and convenient stores in the area, plus the ubiquitous vending machines on every street corner selling soda,...
