KSL Esplanade Hotel has, by many measures, all the makings of a good, if slightly ordinary, hotel. Sequestered away in an emerging area of Klang, it stands tall as a noteworthy effort of progress and gentrification atop the burgeoning KSL Esplanade Mall and bordering the charming Canary Garden park, adding a touch of distinction to an otherwise unremarkable location.
As with any balanced critique, it would be remiss, nay deceptive of me to neglect to highlight the hotel's redeeming qualities. They are, in no particular order:
• The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with plush, comfortable beds, downright frigid air-conditioning and robust water pressure. • The location although slightly removed, is an excellent base for exploring everything the lesser discovered western half of the Klang Valley has to offer. • San Onsen, a tranquil Japanese uchiyu (indoor bath) filled with curative, mineral rich water trucked in directly from a Malaccan underground hot spring source, is perhaps the hotel's most uniquely distinctive feature and one of Klang Valley's best kept wellness secrets. Skipping an experience in this oasis of relaxation and rejuvenation would be a mistake.
Unfortunately, there is a notable and startlingly apparent lack of care and attention to detail that sorely detracts from the overall experience and consequently impression of the property. Specific attention must be drawn to the maintenance standards both within the room and throughout the property, which are, surmised in a single word, deplorable. The main issues I personally encountered, were as follows:
• The writing desk in my room was left unscrewed onto its single supporting leg, causing the entire surface to topple when I placed my backpack on it, hitting and injuring my leg. When a complaint phone call was made to the front desk staff, the response was lackluster, lukewarm and utterly disinterested to say the least. In a sense, the hotel should consider itself rather fortunate that this happened to me, a fully grown adult male, rather than, say, a small child, whereby such an incident would almost certainly spell death (of its reputation that is. Hopefully.) • The elevators servicing guest floors are slow, unpredictable and perhaps worst of all, half of them do not detect your access card, forcing guests to wait even longer for already slow elevators. • The in-room safe was not functioning at all, rendering it necessary for me to carry my valuables on me at all times whenever leaving the hotel, which is unsafe for obvious reasons. • The shower fittings were not properly affixed, giving the shower head the undesirable propensity to flail about wildly and causing water to spray randomly everywhere within the cubicle. • The bidet was installed on the wrong, i.e. left side; This is a Muslim country and it is common knowledge that cleansing is always performed with the left hand, thus requiring bidets to be installed on the right. • Hotel WiFi is extremely unstable, dropping constantly and often prompting “incorrect password” errors. This is compounded by the fact that cell signal throughout the premises is almost nonexistent. • Parking signage and hotel access from the parking area is extremely poor; the car park itself is dusty, filled with construction debris, poorly lit, and downright dodgy at night especially for solo/female travellers.
KSL Esplanade Hotel has, on the balance of things, plenty of meritorious qualities that warrant commendation. The serene San Onsen in particular should be deservedly singled out for due praise. However as often is the case in guest hospitality, it is the cumulative outcome of little things added up that ultimately make up the guest experience, and the hotel has much work to do if it wishes to avoid relegation to the ignominy of being yet another bang-average lodging in the sea of mediocrity that is the Malaysian hospitality scene.
An overall rather generous 3/5, with San Onsen playing a huge role in the determination of the...
